  1. Windows 10 Freezes when dealing with large (75GB) MOV files

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I was thinking similar things, some of the things I've tried in my virtual machines:

    - Installed Quicktime
    - Installed VLC
    - Changed file associations
    - Uninstalled WMP
    - Uninstalled every codec on the machine
    - Installed the k-lite codec package
    - Uninstalled Cortana
    - Uninstalled OneDrive
    - Ran the "Microsoft Fix It for Codec Crashes"
    - Tested disabling all unnecessary services (Superfetch, etc)
    - Ran the Codec Tweak Tool from the k-lite package (Cleared font cache, Cleared Icon cache, Cleared Thumbnail Cache, Hid Video Reel Overlay, Hid Filetype Icon Overlay, Disabled Microsoft DTD-DVD Video Decoder, Disabled DXVA Hardware Acceleration, Disabled Microsoft decoders for: h.264, xvid, divx, mp4v, vc-1, h.265)
    - I tested every registry setting at Computer \ HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Advanced

Those are just some of the things I've tested. Any other suggestions are welcomed. My company's primary function is dealing with large video files so at this point it looks like we will be avoiding further Windows 10 deployments unless they are the "N" version. If you look at what the "N" version excludes (see list at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3010081) it is just the kind of bloat that could cause this issue.

If you have access to both clean installed N and non-N versions, you may try to compare content of registry keys
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\.mov
and set it similarly to N version - but this will probably completely disable video playback for .mov files.
    ---
Or you may look at values under OpenWithProgids subkey - they refer to other class keys. Try to delete all ShellEx subkeys under all mentioned locations - this should only disable Explorer icons generating.

Any registry manipulation can be automated using .reg file, .cmd file which includes reg.exe command calls or group policy.

  3. Great suggestions valihrach, thanks. I tried setting those the same as Windows "N", but there was no change. Then I tried the 'nuclear option' and went though the registry and nuked anything with ".MOV", the issue is still there *Sad

Windows 10 Freezes when dealing with large (75GB) MOV files

Out of curiosity, where could I get such a file? (video files (.MOV QT ProRes) that are 60-100 gigs)

  5. If you wanted to test I think you'd have to make your own, I suspect you'll have a hard time finding files like this on the net - which is probably why this issue is not more well known. ie: One of the QT ProRes files I'm testing with is 91GB for 43 minutes worth of video at 1080p, 185 Mb/s bitrate. Sometimes we deal with 4K files which are even larger.

There are two shell extensions that deal with multimedia content. Thumbnails and the PropertyHandler. You already tried replacing and disabling the first.

You can disable PropertyHandling through these keys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PropertySystem\SystemPropertyHandlers
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PropertySystem\PropertyHandlers

    Don't forget to reboot.

Sad to read the problem persists. Try other workaround - use FreeCommander XE instead of Explorer to copy/move .MOV files.

Other question - as you know, .MOV is only container and it may include different types of a/v streams. Which device produces these files, are they fully conform to (Apple?) standard? Can you change stream types? And are results the same if files are de/muxed using PC software?

But the best way is to learn Windows to ignore content of these files...

Firstly you may try klcp's suggestion - this *should* work, after applying there is no bitrate/framespersec/etc info in Details pane. Maybe you will need to take ownership of these registry keys and to assign FullControl access for Administrators. Then delete both .mov values and restart.

Unfortunely full testing is impossible without problematic files.

  9. YOU ARE AWESOME
    THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

This was the fix... both these registry entries must be removed, one is a .MOV entry, the other is a MOV folder (which is why I missed it when I nuked everything in my registry relating to .MOV). These registry entries are different in Windows 10 "N" and Windows 7, which is why they don't have the same problems.

Below are misc quotes from Microsoft pages which describe PropertyHandlers:

"the performance and reliability characteristics of your property handler in busy, highly concurrent environments is of critical importance"

"the file format should be arranged so that reading or writing property values does not require reading the whole file from disk. Even if the file needs to be sought, it should not be read into memory in its entirety because that bloats the working set of Windows Explorer or the Windows Search indexer as they try to access or index these files"

  12. I am new here. I had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. In fact, it caused me so many problems that I ended up having to hard reboot after freezes which corrupted those files on my hard drive. Then every time I even tried to load the folders (I really needed those videos, I had just shot them), my computer froze up again.

It got so bad that I could barely load anything.

Now - I had the PRO version of Win7 precisely so I could use legacy apps. MSFT uploaded the HOME version of Windows 10 (without my permission, it was pushed to me). But it seemed OK until I got the 1096 anniversary update - DISASTER!!!!!!

I spent hours on the phone - three different techs (because none could solve my problem). I lost everything because of what they did, my favorites, bookmarks, all working apps, MS Office, all my stored passwords, all my archived email for 10 years.

Fortunately, all of my app install files, documents, pics and videos were on a separate hard drive.

They advised me to take that out of the computer and completely reinstall Win 10 PROFESSIONAL, which I had to download and burn a DVD. I am in the process of doing that right now. I am also using a different computer to try to save my other hard disk (the one with all my data) so I ca put it back into my main one once Win10 pro is installed.

What a nightmare. I wish I could just take it to a tech and send Microsoft the bill. I am also going to be very upset if many of y old apps do not work any longer (office 2007, Corel Video, and many more.

I am sorry - but can you please be more specific about what to do with the reg entries? I don't know whether to delete them, or change some value. I would like to see those .MOV files assuming I can get them defragged.

Also - how does one disable thumbnails in folders?

All help greatly appreciated. I should mention again that I am now installing Win 10 PRO (I had Home when my mishaps occurred before) - so maybe I should assume I do not have to worry about these issues anymore?

You need to delete the .mov values and subkeys in those two keys. Should be straight-forward when you see the contents of the keys.

To disable thumbnails delete these keys:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\ShellEx\{e357fccd-a995-4576-b01f-234630154e96}

Microsoft has supposedly fixed this bug in one of the latest (insider) builds.
