    Windows 10 Fresh Install Troubles

So yesterday I did a fresh install of Windows 10 and ran into numerous issues. The first being that freshly installed apps are not showing up in the search bar when I go to search for them to run them, I found out through some research that there aren't new shortcuts to the apps being made in the ProgramData folder and that's probably the reason the .exes are showing up in the search bar to run. The other problem being that some control panel options being searched in the search bar refuse to be opened from there, the "check for updates" option for example comes up in the search bar put pressing enter or clicking to open that option doesn't work and the system doesn't respond. The only way to get to the update screen would be to go to the windows settings through the action center etc. which is a big inconvenience. I've reinstalled multiple times to try and rectify the issues but they are persistent. These issues never happened before the fresh install. I'm at a loss and am really frustrated.

    :)

Windows 10 upgrade failed. Kernel security check failure

Hopefully from a fresh install of Windows 7, updated to SP1, you can then upgrade to Windows 10 (if you still want to) with no further trouble.

    Windows 10 Fresh Install Troubles

    Hi.
I know that after an install, it takes a while for things to "hydrate" (as MS put it), and for indexing to find things, etc.. Have you had the computer on for a while so it can settle in? Have you turned off Fast Startup? What apps are not showing? Store apps or applications you are installing?
First I would run sfc /scannow to make sure all your system files are intact. If it says it found and repaired items, or it could not repair some, please reboot and run it again, at least three times, with reboots in between.
Next, I would run CHKDSK /r on your OS drive.
If these don't help, perhaps a repair install using an in-place upgrade may be in order.

Thanks for the response! I had the computer on for about 12 hours yesterday to let it hydrate as you said, I haven't touched anything as far as "Fast Startup" but should I? There's only a handful of apps that don't show up so I figured they were being installed into a incorrect folder that won't show up. The apps that are not showing up are game clients like Origin and Battle.net, everything else seems to show up fine at the moment. All the store apps show up (even though I don't use them) it only seems to be apps that I install that go missing. I've also done the scans and repair install that you mentioned and they see the PC as healthy with no problems, so I don't know what to do from here.

Twelve hours should be plenty. I would definitely turn off Fast Startup, at least for a while; do some reboots, see if there are any updates in WU, etc. Do you know what Fast Startup is/does?
To understand what this is/does (it was first introduced in Windows 8):
“Fast Startup (aka: hybrid boot or hybrid Shutdown) is a new feature in Windows 8 to help your PC start up faster after shutting down. When turned on, Windows 8 does this by using a hybrid shutdown (a partial hibernate) method that saves only the kernel session and device drivers (system information) to the hibernate (hiberfil.sys) file on disk instead of closing it when you shut down your PC. This also makes the hiberfil.sys file to be much smaller than what hibernate would use (often 4GB or more). When you start your PC again, Windows 8 uses that saved system information to resume your system instead of having to do a cold boot to fully restart it. Using this technique with boot gives a significant advantage for boot times, since reading the hiberfile in and reinitializing drivers is much faster on most systems (30-70% faster on most systems tested). If you have a motherboard with UEFI, then fast startup will be even faster.”
Unfortunately, there are some times/things that just need a full, real shutdown to get right. You can always turn it back on any time.

I have both those games installed on my system and they both show up in the Start Menu. They were installed on version 10240 - the first General Release to the public about a year ago. So, I'm not sure why they would not install correctly for you - doesn't make sense, you know? But, the games are working correctly?

If sfc /scannow returned "no integrity violations found", and CHKDSK had no repairs to make, that's good. You also did a repair install?

The next thing we can do is manually place them in the Start Menu. Not really a solution, but it will accomplish the goal. You game?

I'll try disabling the fast startup right now and restart, then let you know what's up. And yeah I never had the problem of origin and battle.net not showing up in the start menu before reformatting, so it's kinda odd. In order to open them I have to go through the system files to find the .exe [kinda weird]. It's as if they don't even exist according to the start menu, bu they show up in the control panel under programs, so I know they are still installed. The game clients and games work correctly, it's just a matter of finding them you know? Before reformatting I would just use the windows search feature to pull up anything I needed to access and everything worked fine. And yes that is correct I did a repair install, and as far as I can tell it didn't change much [at least for my situation]. And I'm aware I can add the programs manually but it's kinda a drag ya know? Never had this kinda problem before, but luckily it's only a handful of programs that are causing issues so maybe it's not such a big deal.

    Windows 10 Fresh Install Troubles

Yeah, it really is strange, especially since they installed for me without issue. Everything appears to be in order as far as your OS is concerned. I recall installing one program once, that I had to manually put in the Start Menu, but it was an old program so I wasn't surprised. Sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe someone else will pop in with some ideas.

No problem. Leave the thread open (don't mark it as solved), and maybe someone else will have some ideas for you. Cheers!
