That's how sideways this thread has already gone! essenbe And you are quite correct since most of us would automatically reply back indicating we have had to seek out device drivers on all too many occasions that will not be found included with any version. The 10 installer actually looked up the 7 driver needed for the old tuner card still in use on 10 in fact!

MS works hand in hand at times with the OEM sources to work some basic generic level drivers simply to see Windows up and running at first before additional hardware drivers are sought. That is how it has been since the start until 10 now sees a more efficient driver search option during the installation.

"Insider Preview should work with the same devices and programs that work with Windows 8.1, but you might need to update or reinstall some of them.

Drivers for basic functions like storage, networking, input, and display come with Windows. These drivers allow you to complete the Windows installation and connect to the Internet. You might be able to get more drivers from Windows Update."

Some basic windows drivers are over 10 years old, just check in Device manager !!! They have to be present in any boot device just to be able to boot from it.
Did anybody watch during BOOT with XP, they were in plain sight there ? Even in W10 same thing is happening but is hidden from view.

If you actually read through the other linked pages you would have learned that MS packs in several generic drivers in order to get the OS installed and running while the WU is what is used to deliver specific driver updates. The alternative to the WU function would be going direct to the OEM support site per specific hardware or premade system.

The OEMs will develop their own driver bases per version by working along with MS in the early stages as well as the progression of the necessary fixes as each new version goes through it's stages. That includes far more then just the Insider Preview builds which are primarily the last builds prior to finished general update build as how things are now being worked for 10.

The oldest drivers now seen for 10 wouldn't be any older then those seen for 7. You might even be able to get a few Vista drivers to work simply due the close compatibility connection between Vista/7 but XP and older out of the loop at this point.
