Microsoft is rolling out a new Windows 10 update with improvements for built-in display monitor settings and Windows Search experience.

In the preview builds, Microsoft is testing a new feature that will allow you to change the refresh rate of your display. The feature is finally built right into Windows 10 and you don’t have to use Nvidia or Intel’s Control Panel program to change the refresh rate of your monitor.

This feature will begin rolling out to all Windows 10 devices later this year. As shown in the screenshot below, you can access refresh rate options from Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings.

    Windows Search is getting better

Microsoft is finally rolling out some much-needed improvements to Windows Search on devices running Windows 10 version 1903, version 1909, version 2004, and 20H2. Windows 10 gets new refresh rate feature, Start Menu search tweaks Windows-Search-bar.jpg

After the update, you will notice improvements to the ‘recent list’ box that now shows the last four items and the box is updated every time when you search for items. The ‘recent list’ box in Windows Search can now show URLs, files, settings, and apps.

Microsoft is also introducing a new option “x” that lets you remove individual items. The remove button shows when you hover your mouse over individual items in this list.

If you don’t like the recent results feature, Microsoft is now also allowing users to turn off the feature completely under the Settings > Search > Permissions and History. By default, the recent list will be hidden if you’ve not used Windows Search before.

Microsoft will still use the Windows Search box to promote Microsoft Edge, Skype, and other services, including a new ‘educational string’ that will remind you about Windows Search capabilities.

The Windows Search update is rolling out to everyone and you don’t have to join the Insider program to see these improvements. Later this year, Microsoft will also add dark mode to Windows Search results to match your theme preference.

Note that if you have performance issues with Windows 10’s built-in search experience, Microsoft recently introduced a new Registry value that turns off Bing results to improve the accuracy of local results.

  2. Refresh rate Problem

    Hi Robert,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Screen refresh rate is the rate at which the data displayed on screen is refreshed; it may be an image or some text document. Most of the users would like to set it to a higher rate but this also depends on the capacity of graphic
card and monitors. If the refresh rate is slow, the images on the display looks as flickering to the user eye and makes it uncomfortable to work.

Nowadays the latest monitors available in market will have minimum 60 Hz of refresh rate and it is very good option to set it to 70 Hz if you your monitor is compatible. Normally a high performance or quality monitors can reach
120 Hz of refresh rate. So I would suggest you to set your monitor refresh rate as higher as possible, below given steps describes how to access this feature on your Windows 8.1/10 PC.

    • The default refresh rate setting is 60 Hertz (HZ); however, your monitor may support a higher setting. Check your manufacturer's documentation for information about the settings that your monitor supports.
    • If you use a higher refresh rate, you can reduce the rate that your screen flickers; however, if you specify a refresh rate that is too high for your monitor, your screen may become unusable and your hardware may be damaged.
    • Changes to the refresh rate affect all users that log on to the computer.
I would, as of now, suggest you to visit the computer manufacturer's support website and install the latest display and chipset drivers available for the latest operating system (currently it would be 8.1 in the list).

Hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reply in case you face any other issues with Windows in future.

    Variable Refresh Rate

    Hello William, *Smile

Does your PC meet the requirements below for Variable Refresh Rate?

You won’t see the slider unless your system has all of the following. If any of these are missing, you will not see the toggle and the feature will not be enabled for you.
    • Windows 10 version 1903 or later
    • A G-SYNC or Adaptive-Sync capable monitor
    • A GPU with WDDM 2.6 or above drivers, that supports G-SYNC / Adaptive-Sync and this new OS feature

    Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Launch the Store from your Start menu.
    • Click the user icon next to the search box.
    • Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
    • Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
    • When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”
