Windows 10: Windows 10 goes to sleep when it definitely should NOT

I've been experiencing this on several all? of my systems at home for quite a while now, and I'm biting the bullet to ask around about thismajor annoyance.


TL;DR The PC goes to sleep while some activity is running, and this causes failures in that activity.


The typically occurrence of this issue is as follows: a PowerShell script, or some other lengthy activity, that uses the CPU and some data that resides on my Ubuntu/Samba DIY NAS is running. This takes hours.


During that activity, the PC goes to sleep and possibly then hibernates. Of course, when resuming from there, the script will have experienced errors when accessing the data over the network and/or some network-connection-related error popups are displayed on the screen.


My only workaround so far is to use The Caffeine to force the system to stay awake, but...

- this shouldn't be needed and wasn't in the past, before some update but I can't remember when

- I have to remember to turn it off after running such a lenghty activity


It seems that Windows 10 has changed the rules that reset the "sleep timer", and that just guessing accessing data over the network on a remote SMB/CIFS share doesn't reset that timer anymore.


Any clue?


How would you anyone from Microsoft listening? troubleshoot this?

PC goes to sleep automatically.

Windows 10 (sometimes) goes to sleep after only 2 minutes of inactivity

Hello Mark,

Your screensaver might be one of the possible reasons why your computer goes to sleep every time the computer is inactive. It is possible that the idle time is set every 2 minutes. Having said that, you can try adjusting the waiting time by following the
steps below and see if it makes any difference:

• Go to Control Panel, click on Appearance and Personalization.
• Select Personalization.
  
• Click on Screen Saver at the bottom right.
• Adjust the waiting time and hit Apply.
