Windows 10: Windows 10 hangs at 13% after running CHKDSK /R

I have been trying to repair laptop's Windows 10, started running CHKDSK /R about 5pm at night, and it seemed to hang at 13%. I had set the laptop to not go to sleep, so went to bed about 11pm with it still showing 13%. I awoke at 7am the next morning and it still showed 13%.
I tried running the repair two more times, and both times it was still at 13% after several hours.

Prior to running CHKDSK I did the following:
Did a thorough check for virus and malware
Did a system defrag
Ran SFC/ SCANNOW which did not find any issues.
My Toshiba tools give the computer, including the battery, a clean bill of health.

What can I do to help the computer finish the repairing instead of getting stuck at 13%?

Can't create System Image Backup in Windows 10

Now I can't run chkdsk it hangs up at 13 %. I let it run all day and overnight. It never got past 13%.

I gave the laptop back to its owner. I was just trying to back it up for them after they upgraded to Windows 10.

 

Running chkdsk C: /r and it sticks it 13% for a while, never finishes, and then shuts itself down. Chkdsk /f succesfully completes.

Windows 10- run command prompt as admin Chkdsk C: /r.

When I run the Windows check disk program it finds no errors either, the same as chkdsk /f.

I suspect I have bad sectors on my HDD. I have been chasing BSDs for a couple of months.

 

Try doing the CHKDSK using the Windows setup disk, just to make sure you have a clean environment you are working from.

 

Unfortunately i don't have a Windows setup disk.

 

I've tried some additional things but still not able to get past 13%.

I entered wmic, and ran "diskdrive get status" and received the reply that the diskdrive was ok

I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and this completed successfully

I ran a complete Spybot scan on my computer and found no malware.

Then I ran Chkdsk /R again and it still stops at 13%, and never gets past that no matter how many hours I wait.

Does anyone have any other suggestions, short of replacing the hard drive?

 

Isnt the /R checking whole disk for bad sectors and trying to fix them? This shouldnt be needed to use at all for a disks newer than 4-5 years. Using /R can also damage your disk if it wasnt already damaged.

If it gets stuck, try to ctrl-alt-del out of it and if you can do that, you need to delete the chkdsk schedule afterwards. Then reboot it via list and "disable error report" After that try to run chkdsk /F and see what happens?

 

The computer IS almost 5 years old, first of all. Running the chkdsk repair was kind of a last resort. When the problems started (system getting slower and slower, freezing), I first did all standard stuff (checked for viruses/malware, defragged, got rid of bloatware, removed almost everything from startup, ran SFC /scannow, took it back to a previous restore point, DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth), and finally did a complete reset of Windows taking it back to when Windows 10 was first installed. The problems continued. I ran wmic/diskdrive get status and was told the drive was OK. I ran tests on the battery, was told it was OK, and ran the laptop with no battery. I ran complete tests on the RAM (which was bought new 5 months ago) and it passed all the tests. I ran chkdsk /scan and it did not find any issues, then ran chkdsk /spotfix which breezed thorugh quickly. Ran sfc /scannow again, and it did find 20 bad sectors on the drive, but detected no other problems. Ran tests on the processor, no problems. Updated the bios. So I was trying to run chkdsk /r as a last resort.... The fact that it stops at 13% seems telling that there is indeed a problem, but for the life of me I can't figure out what the problem could be.

 

You need a second computer or that Setup disk to be certain you get a proper repair.

Repairing bad sectors can take a long time so be patient. I would however backup everything important while you still can and then swap that faulty HDD, just in case.

S.M.A.R.T. may sometimes not give any errors though the HDD is faulty.

I have a hard drive I removed from another laptop I am going to wipe, and then I can clone the old hard drive to the newer one. But I want to make sure there is nothing on the old hard drive's OS that is the problem first....in other words, I don't want to simply move the old problem to the replacement hard drive. So I need to eliminate any possibility that it is related to Windows.
