    Windows 10 hangs with disk thrashing


    Severall times a day my Windows 10 Home system stops responding. At the same time the disk light goes on solid. I know the CPU isn't locked up because the mouse pointer, an hour glass, still moves. But all app windows are inert. Sometimes the screen goes completely black except for the mouse. After a minute or so the system comes back to life as if nothing happened. All apps are working normally again.


    Curiously the task bar still works. If I have Task Manager already running when this happens, I can switch to it. I've sorted processes by disk activity hoping to see what is monopolizing the disk. But the weirdest part is that all listed processes show zero disk usage, but the Disk column heading shows 100%. Supposedly no process is using the disk, but the disk is 100% busy. It's as if some invisible process takes over the disk momentarily, then goes away.


    Windows is on all the latest updates. I've run Windows Antivirus and ClamWin, and both say the system is clean. I'm out of ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

    Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
