Windows 10: Windows 10 Hard Disc utilization at 100%.

I am fed up of this 100% disc utilization issue with Windows 10. I guess everyone who are searching for the solution of this issue is either beating around the bushes or getting mislead by MS official/ un-official posts or suggestions. I have been through dozens of blogs and post and now getting a sense that Microsoft knows very well, the issue but they don't have solution for it.


I have tried all of the available solutions so far and none of them worked as a final solution. Even on the clean laptop without Skype and Chrome (as these two are being tagged as culprits on most of the blogs) my laptop shoot up to 100% disc utilization every single time while booting up, and remains at above 97% for a long time after the start.


I have Dell Inspiron Core(TM) i7 -5500U @ 2.4 GHz with 16.0 GB RAM and 2 TB Hard Disc.

I have read all the threads on 100% disk utilization for Windows 10 and don't know what else to do to solve the problem (plus some threads go on for 38 pages). It shouldn't be this hard; looking for some suggestions. Thanks!

 

100% disc activity issue

From description I understand that you are unable to work with your computer as expected. We will help you to resolve the issue.

These issues might occur due to applications or services running at the startup on the computer. Bad sectors on the hard drive or outdated and incompatible drivers might also cause such issues.

1. Which software are you using to monitor the hard disk activity?

2. Do you get any error message on the computer?

I suggest you to try the below steps and check if it helps:

Step 1: First of all, take a note of the processes or applications that is running when the computer runs with high disk usage. Also, we need to find the applications that are running at startup.

Follow the steps to check for the processes under Task Manager:

•Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.

•Click on Processes tab. Check if any of the processes consumes high memory usage.

Bad sectors on the hard drive can be a cause for high disk usage.

Check which process is utilizing the Hard Disk on Windows 8.1, you may try the following steps.

• 
  Open Task Manager and click on
  Details tab.
  
• 
  Right click the columns headers and click "Select Columns".
  
• 
  From the "Select Columns" window, check: I/O Reads, I/O Writes, I/O read bytes, I/O write bytes and then click
  OK.
  
• 
  Now the columns will be added to the view and will display how much each process is utilizing from the hard disk.
  
• 
  Sort by I/O read bytes or I/O write bytes by clicking on the column header to see which process is utilizing the Hard Drive most.
  

Step 2: If you have not run the 'check disk' scan or tried optimizing the drive, follow the steps from this article.

Improve performance by optimizing your drive

(Note: This applies to Windows 10 also.)

Important: While performing check disk on the hard drive, if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive, it tries to repair that sector and any data available on that might be lost.

Windows 10: 100% disk utilization in the Task Manger after Start up.

I realize the inconvenience you are experiencing with high hard disk usage in the task manager . I will certainly help you.

This issue might occur if there is change in system settings.

To assist you better, please provide us the information below:

• When you say that "it goes back to a higher usage", is hard disk percentage increases to 100% percentage or up to certain high level? Is there is any variation in hard disk percentage when run different application on Windows 10?
• When you say that "problem saving u post them for others", what are the troubleshooting steps which you have tried to resolve the issue?

I suggest you to follow the steps below to check for any system changes in the computer and also update all the Windows updates.

Step 1: I suggest you to perform the system maintenance troubleshooter. It will resolve the common system problems.

1. Click on Search bar.

2. Type “Troubleshooting” without the quotes and click on
Troubleshooting.

3. Then click on System and Security.

4. Click on System Maintenance.

5. Click on Next and follow the prompts to run the troubleshooter.

Step 2: I recommend you to update all the pending Windows updates on the computer and check if it helps.
