Windows 10: windows 10 has 'crashed' 3 times in three months WHY??

Not sure if this is the right thread to post but my windows 10 has stalled or crashed or NO start at least three times in the past 90 days .. I get the BIG Blue Start emblem and nothing else., googled a lot of this on line and followed the youtube videos to fix .. each times I had to do afull Reset which retains my programs but deletes my desktop aps. which means reinstall emails, office, and web browsers apart from Edge ..etc ...

what am I doing? not sure , as I only use my windows 10 for reading the news , browsing the Internet and displaying my photos and video viewing using Powerdvd17 .. I always keep the PC up to date and of course use Essentials for virus control .. I do not view or peruse any porn sites etc ... Don't think it is a virus as I have in the past use Fixme stick and only came up with a half dozen malware/ cookies from various web sites ..

NOW I can't be the only one.. there must be others with the same scenario , How is it I can use windows XP pro for a dozen years and have never had that O/S stall or crash or hang.. yet with win10 latest creators version has crashed three ( or maybe it was 4 times) in the past year.. ?? twice in 30 days for the last two !!

Ideas ? comments ?

Windows 10 crashing

My new windows 10 PC has been running fine for months, but in the last week it has crashed at least twice or three times per day with a Microsoft 10 critical error. It starts to upload the problem to Microsoft and then the machine restarts.

there does not seem to be anything stored on the error, so have no idea how to fix it

Any ideas?

Having worked on computers for the best part 20+ years I'd have to say 3 failures in 90 days is not really a good enough track record to make decisions from. Knowing what diagnostics were performed prior to a Reset may be helpful.

to install on unallocated space - preferably an empty drive (no partitions)

This is so funny - For us "older" users, we remember when OS would crash 3 times in a DAY back in XP/Vista era. Even Windows 7 crashed more frequently than 3 times in 90 days.

One thing about PC crashing frequently was we all learnt the first two Golden Rules of Computing

GR1) Always back up data regularly

GR2) If any doubt, refer back to Golden Rule 1

I doubt there is a modern OS in the world that would only crash 3 times in 90 days. I get crashes more frequently than than on the much simpler Android OS!

 

I wish my Windows only crashed 3 times in 90 days. That is really not bad at all.

 

3x in 90 days is definitely not my experience, thankfully.

Lacking other information, I'd start with hardware diagnostics. Disk, RAM, stress tests, as it seems your PC is unbootable after the crash.

Q: How do you avoid resetting/clean installs as recovery means when things go wrong?
A: Use disk imaging routinely. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for disk image sets.

You can recover Windows to the working state based on the last image you created in, say, an hour. Exactly as was. Assuming no hardware fault other than a failed disk, which of course you would replace and then restore your image to that.

9-12 mins to update an image set for SSD-based Windows over USB3.

And of course you can image any set of partitions or disks.

How could you find out why your unbootable PC crashed?
Here's where hopefully experts here might offer solutions- not something I've explored.

For example, I believe this utility could look at dump files on your PC:




You would boot your PC using a bootable disk such as Kyhi's - available from the top of the Software and Apps section here.

You could read the event log offline:

There are other tools for viewing event logs such as Event Log Explorer and Nirsoft's FullEventLogView

My first question would be "What kind of "crash" happened", was it sudden shutdown, BSOD, any messages when that happens ?

 

It's good to know you have tried to figure out what's wrong but we still need a sense of troubleshooting procedures and results.

You have an hp elitebook 8730w laptop. How old is the computer? Is this an original Win10 computer?
--- Check your Update and Security: are Windows Updates up-to-date?
--- Then check View update installed history: are there any failures?

Please run winver and lets us know the exact version you are using?
--- It sounds to me from you described you are on 1709
--- If that's the case it should have updated from 1703
--- Is this the case?

I don't recall everything it will check for but let it analyze your system including the hard drive.

Go into Control Panel and select Troubleshooting
Some of the choices are Blue Screen, Hardware and Devices with quite a few other choices that might attract your attention.

 

Please run this version of the log collector and post a zip into this thread for troubleshooting:
