Windows 10: Windows 10 has died - how to fix? (black screen, all winRE options failing, can't reinstall...

It had been a few days since restarting, so a few hours ago I restarted my PC and walked away. I assume Windows installed an update or something, because when I came back I had a black screen with cursor. I see by googling that this is apparently a common problem... the error where it boots, Windows 10 loads, and then you have a black screen with only a cursor.

I attempted some fixes for this, however nothing worked - ctrl-alt-delete wouldn't bring up a task manager, etc. Eventually I tried restarting in Safe Mode and getting into winRE, as instructed here. I then tried to restore Windows to a previous state, as instructed here. I had a save point from a few days ago, and I commenced the process and went away from my PC for a couple minutes while it did it's thing. Upon returning, it had restarted and was again showing a black screen with a cursor... no luck.

After many more restarts and trying everything winRE has to offer, things are now worse. Startup repair didn't work, uninstalling updates didn't work, system restore I had already tried, startup repair found no solution. When in winRE and clicking "continue" to attempt to load windows normally, I now get a BSoD and automatic restart, which kicks me back into winRE. I have even tried "Reset this PC" (with "Keep my files"). It fails too. It just says "There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made."

Help! What do? I need some expert guidance here...

Sounds like the old... windows black screen of death.

Windows 10 failing to boot into Windows (Black Screen).


I have a problem with my Windows 10 system. Previously I did the free upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and everything worked fine for several months, until now, the system will not boot into windows and on boot up I am presented with a black screen and a flashing cursor (see pic).
I did carry out a recovery usb backup when the Windows 10 was installed, I have tried booting from the usb pen drive to attempt a recovery or fix, but both options have failed, unable to repair and cannot find recovery setup file.
Please could someone suggest another option that I can use to attempt to get the system running again?
