Windows 10: Windows 10 high CPU after memory upgrade

This one's got me really scratching my head trying to figure out what's going on. It's a first for me in my many years of working with servers and workstations of various flavours.


Doubling my home desktop PC memory from 16 to 32GB has had a very unexpected side effect; CPU (Core i5) utilisation has gone through the roof, hitting 100% with 100% and higher on the max frequency. Practical result being that Windows is almost unusable. And if I boot the PC to Centos Linux there's no problem. In fact, the first indication that there's any sort of issue is on the reboot after adding the memory; I get the Windows logo and the spinner, but that's it. Unless I leave the PC for literally a couple of hours, when the login screen does finally appear.


Now the twist; if I remove the extra 16GB (2x8GB modules), everything is back to normal. And I know it's not the new memory modules, because I can go to 16GB with either pair of modules and it's just peachy. And all four modules were actually purchased at the same time, so are ostensibly identical.


Notice that nothing else is being changed, I'm simply adding or removing the physical memory. I can't think that there would be any driver compatibility issues or such like, which are usually the go-to 'fix' for high CPU or other unexplained Windows issues. And for once the AV (Kaspersky) isn't hogging the system (another go-to). As I type I can see the Spooler service is using 20%+ CPU, even though all I'm running is task manger/resource monitor and Chrome (which I'm typing this note in to). sedlauncher.exe also seems to be consuming 20%+ CPU.


I'm open to suggestions on this. For now I'm leaving Windows running to see if it might sort itself out, whatever 'it' might be. I have considered going nuclear and reinstalling W10 to see if it behaves, but I'd prefer to understand/fix the issue.

Windows 10 Display Blinking with High CPU

After upgrade to Windows 10, experiencing flashing display and high CPU.

• At initial logon screen everything is normal - wall paper and logon screen display with no blinking
• After logon, fan starts as CPU usage spikes, cursor is accompanied by the spinning blue circle
• touchscreen does not respond to swipe to access Recovery/Safe mode for reboot
• able to get to Task Manager and Perfmon to see high CPU usage and explorer.exe is suspended

looking for suggestions on how to either fix or roll back to Windows 8.1
