  1. Windows 10 Home - Repeatedly fails after reinstall in same manner

    Hi All

I have a problem which is difficult to articulate as a general user, so bear with me please.

Over the past year or so I have been forced to complete a full format of my drive and reinstall Window 10 Home on roughly 3/4 separate occasions, with each occasion being for the same reason. This includes occasions both before and after I upgraded my PC, replacing all components (CPU, Mobo, RAM, GPU, Sound Card, PSU, all HDDs/SDDs), and therefore it does not seem something tied to hardware. It has also happened both before and after the May 2019 update which I have seen mentioned on other posts, so it is not attributable to that.

The problem arises with no prompt seemingly after some months have passed between reinstalls - during this time I do not install any software or make any changes to my PC whatsoever; I purely use it for gaming and thus I install Steam, Origin, Discord, nVidia GeForce Experience at the outset (along with AVG antivirus and Google Chrome). So the problem also seems unconnected with any actions or changes I make as a user (no one but me uses the PC).

The problem itself, as best as I can describe, seems to be around access rights in Windows. This usually manifests in a failure to update the nVidia graphics drives, or even the management software itself (GeForce Experience). The problem also is indicated by other issues however, most often being that Windows will prompt me to confirm if any application is allowed to open / make changes to the PC (I think via 'User Access Control' prompt, or something similar to this). Other indicators would be full blown restriction to open certain applications (Control Panel for example), giving me a red prompt that its been blocked for my protection, and failures in games to load or update (Windows Update also fails).

If you are kind enough to read this far, please take heed of what I say next; I have attempted to undertake every single fix that I can in relation to this matter, and have spent 20+ hours to this effect on the most recent occasion. Whilst I cannot convey/remember them individually as a general user, I must stress that they never work, but more importantly, the fixes themselves can rarely be deployed/completed due to another error along the individual steps which ultimately seem tied to the original problem. I have tried to 'fix the fixes', but ultimately they are not possible. A number of those fixes attempt to use changes to 'Local Security Policy', but despite trying to access this in numerous ways, it seems something that cannot be done using the Home version of windows.

Whilst I would welcome any fixes for this problem, my real desire from this post is to know whether anyone can explain *why* it is happening. As I said at the outset, this issue appears regardless of the hardware the PC is running and regardless of any actions/changes/software installs by me as user. It almost seems that something degrades/fails over time on its own within Windows that simply cannot be prevented, and at this point feels like it is always an inevitable outcome from operating the PC over a given period of time.

    Thank you,
    Neil

    :)

  4. Windows 10 Home - Repeatedly fails after reinstall in same manner

    Windows 10 fails to update

When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.
