    windows 10 home to pro

I have just bought a laptop with windows 10 home and I want to upgrade to 10 pro.

I have a valid license for windows 7 pro which I installed wiping the partitions fro the 10 home install.

This went ok and was activated as 7 pro. I then I attempted to upgrade using an extracted ISO of windows 10 downloaded from Microsoft and I now have windows 10 home again.

I don't want to have to pay $150 for the 10 pro upgrade from the app store if I can avoid it.

How do I get windows 10 pro from the windows 7 pro and retain secure boot?

    :)

  2. Windows 10 upgrade?

Once upgraded to Windows 10 Home there is absolutely no benefit over Windows 7 Home Premium over Windows 7 Starter. Microsoft have decided to simplify the number of Editions for Windows 10 due to the many complains they got with the many different editions
of Windows 8.1 and not clearly distinguishing them.

    Windows 7 Starter → Windows 10 Home

    Windows 7 Starter N → Windows 10 Home

[*]Windows 7 Home Basic → Windows 10 Home
[*]Windows 7 Home Premium → Windows 10 Home
    [*]Windows 7 Home Premium N → Windows 10 Home
    [*]Windows 8.1 → Windows 10 Home
    [*]Windows 8.1N → Windows 10 Home
[*]Windows 8.1 Single Language → Windows 10 Home
[*]Windows 8.1 with Bing → Windows 10 Home
[*]Windows 8.1 Single Language with Bing → Windows 10 Home
    [*]Windows 7 Professional → Windows 10 Pro
    [*]Windows 7 Professional N → Windows 10 Pro
    [*]Windows 7 Ultimate → Windows 10 Pro
    [*]Windows 7 Ultimate N → Windows 10 Pro
    [*]Windows 8.1 Pro → Windows 10 Pro
    [*]Windows 8.1 Pro N → Windows 10 Pro
[*]Windows 8.1 Pro (Student) → Windows 10 Pro
[*]Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Centre → Windows 10 Pro

Note if that is a full license (non-OEM license) you can transfer it and revert your machine back to Windows 7 Starter allowing you to upgrade two PCs to Windows 10.

One thing that can happen, depending on how you install Windows 10, is it will read and use the OEM embedded key by default. My laptop has an OEM 8.0 Core key. The current Windows 10 install media reads it and installs 10 Home. I originally did the free upgrade from 8.1 Pro so I am entitled to Pro. What I did the first time this happened is I entered the generic Pro key VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T in the Change product key box on the system page. This does the upgrade to Pro. It then activated with my digital entitlement for Pro. In your case, you could enter that key to upgrade to Pro, then enter your 7 Pro key to activate with. The current Windows 10 install media will accept Windows 7 and 8/8.1 keys for activation. Is your Windows 7 key a Retail key?

It is slightly easier now with 10586, as there is now a 'go to store' button so you no longer have to enter the generic key.

This was added as a result of Insider feedback.

  6. Good stuff. I added a PID.txt file with the generic Pro key to the sources folder on my install media. It overrides the OEM key and installs Pro with no key prompt. I don't even have to click skip. Activates with my Pro digital entitlement. No muss no fuss.
