Windows 10: Windows 10 install fails - a recent hardware or software change might be the cause

I had a ten year old computer running Windows 7.


It had a 240gb SSD with win 7 and all other applications on it, and a 1Tb hdd for data that is now full.


I upgraded it by replacing the motherboard, processor, ram, gpu, and adding an additional 2Tb hdd.


I have a retail usb flash drive of win 10 home plugged into one of the rear usb ports.


I can get into the BIOS no problem and all hardware is recognized. I set the boot mode to legacy+UEFI and set USB as #1 in the boot priority.


On startup, after the BIOS flash screen, i see a windows boot manager screen that asks me to choose an operating system. I choose 64 bit and the next screen pops up with a "loading files" progress bar. A few seconds later another screen pops up with all this in it:

"Windows failed to start. A recent Hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:


1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.

2. Choose your language setting, then click "next."

3. Click "repair your computer."


If you do not have this disc contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Status:. 0xc0000225


Info: The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.

This is as far as i can get. It happens every time i start or restart the computer.


I have tried the following things with no different results:


Set boot mode to UEFI


Insert win10 flash drive into different usb port


Disconnect ssd drive that has windows 7 on it.


Any suggestions?


The goal is to perform a clean installation of win 10 onto the ssd that originally had win 7 on it.

Hi all,

Please help.

I've replaced the drive in my laptop with a SSD, when I've tried to install Windows7 Pro from a bootable USB I have I get the following message:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

Status: Error 0xc000000d

It advises me to insert a windows boot disc and restart (well I'm trying to install windows on a new disc so there is a boot disc in.

Please help.

Windows Updates failed to instal

I just did step one and they have just all installed.... thank you so much.... it was quite frustrating having that update window pop up every 5 minutes and failing to instal every time
