Windows 10: Windows 10 install question(s)

Ok.... I'm the new guy here so please be patient with me.

I want to install Windows 10 Pro on my computer running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I downloaded the helper tool from Microsoft and have the files on a usb drive. I know I have to have a Windows 10 Pro key which I do have. I bought it from Kinguin.org. I know I have to restart my computer and make the usb drive as my startup device insyead of my SSD which has Win 7 installed.

My question is this: will I just be upgrading my computer to Windows 10 or will it wipe out my files and do a clean install?

Wanted to ask some questions about Windows 10 S mode home edition

HI I was wondering if someone could answer some questions for me please.

My first question is this if you all ready have Windows 10 home on your desktop computer and windows 10 update installs patches automatically to your computer I was wondering will their be away for a home user to keep windows update from installing Windows
10 S home on your desktop computer automatically?

The other question I have about Windows 10 S home is will Windows 10 S mode come as a separate instal and not come packaged with in the update to windows 10 home?

Windows update to creator caused a no boot after the login

We are glad to know that you are able to use the installation media. Regarding your question, you should choose edition and version of Windows that is originally installed on your computer. For example,
Windows 10 Home 64-bit. Windows 10 S is a configuration of Windows 10 Pro that is streamlined for security and performance. To read more about Windows 10 S, kindly see

Regarding your second question, the version of Windows 10 before the Creators Update is Windows 10 version 1607 Anniversary Update. However, if you are using the installation media to clean install or reinstall Windows 10, it would install the latest version
of Windows 10, which is the Fall Creators Update.

Hi, if you plan to do a clean install, you would boot your PC from the Win 10 bootable medium.

If you plan to keep your programs, data, user profile etc etc, then you
a. Boot normally and log in
b. Plug in your disk
c. Run setup.exe on that disk.

N.B.
Before such a big upgrade, please please act defensively. Some people find they can't boot after upgrading.

Please create a disk image of Windows with e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot disk + external storage for image sets.
All contributors here use this routinely, updating their image sets regularly.

That way you can be so much more assured of a way back if things go wrong.

It's also wise to
a. Check your disk before upgrading (e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel (trial)
b. Run chkdsk before upgrading (a routine maintenance procedure):
From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:

Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
c. Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals
d. Disable or preferably uninstall your AV (you will probably need a different version when running Win 10).
