This week i got NUMEROUS pcs that all had package for rollup amd64 18362.900.1.8 and 18362.900.1.9 install in the morning prior to powering their pc down.

This meant immediately on turning their Laptops on again the machine was basically bricked. It would ether freeze during startup, or on a black screen showing a mouse cursor simply sit there with a spinning circle icon forever.

If you drop to recovery command prompt and check with dism, chkdsk, and sfc, the machine will show no errors.

If you attempt to remove the previous rollup using dism or the recovery mode remove last update option it will fail, as the update has been marked "not allowed to be removed"

If you manually using dism on console update to the next rollup afterwards that supercedes it which was the fix when the same issue occured in rollup amd64 16299 it will install sucessfully but the machine will still be unable to boot.

This issue previously occured when upgrading or fresh installing windows 10 builds between 1511 and 1709 but appeared to be mostly fixed with a driver update after build 1801

In build 1901 to 2004 the issue appears to have returned. If you attempt a fresh install of windows 10 or do a system reset, or windows update just decides to install without telling you the install process will brick/lockup the machine at somewhere between 20% or 89% - or if it gets past that stage by brute force, it will just leave you with a frozen or infinately booting spinning ball symbol on trying to boot into it.

    --------------
    Workaround:

    --------------

The good news appears to be that if you power the machine down immediately on becoming bricked and physically remove your wifi chip/card from the laptop or desktop it will likely boot normally or at least allow the setup process to progress.

Once you are in windows, and have installed all the windows updates, it should be safe to install the wifi card again. Then if you update to a wifi driver version newer than 2015 there is a fair chance the machine will work normally again - at least until the next package for rollup amd 64 automatically tries to install it, or you need to do a system reset.

Not sure why Microsoft re-introduced a bug from build 1600+ that was fixed; but no doubt there was some fix that the ego of one of the programmers couldnt resist trying to do again Windows 10 install / rollup amd64 18362.900.1.8 and 9 or up will brick pc if Qualcom /... :p

So If you find a laptop or desktop randomly brick for no reason other than windows update. Yank out the wifi card.

    :)

  2. Microsoft is moving to a rollup model for Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2 ETC...

    It was bound to happen!
However, this may indeed cure the Windows 7 slow update issue finally.

Here is a quick blurb on this subject:

I'm not sure if this is a good move on Microsoft's side or not.

    What does everyone think?

Installing Windows 10 on New PC?

I'm going to be building a new PC on Christmas and want to install Windows 10 on it. I have Windows 10 on my current PC, which I installed upgrading from 8.1 with the files on a USB. How do I go about installing a clean copy of Windows 10 on this new PC? I think I recall something about installing it once makes Microsoft recognize your hardware, but since this will be a PC I'm not sure what steps I need to take. Do I need to go 8.1 -> 10 or is there a method of going directly to 10?
