Windows 10: Windows 10 Installation Black Screen of Death

Hello all.


On Jan 17, 2020, I installed Windows 10 Home on myDell Precision T5810. I chose the fresh install instead on using the upgrade route.

After installation, I got the black screen of death after Windows 10 booted up. During the boot sequence, the hardware/harddrive screen appears, then I get the Windows 10 logo with the spinning dots for about 15 seconds. Then the screen goes black and my monitor reports a lost signal and stays black. I read through many of the posts and answers on this forum. Thank you for the information provided.


So far, I have tried the following.

A. Booted into Safe Mode with Networking. And updated the device driver for theNVIDIA NVS 310. I downloaded the latest driver for this from NVIDIA's site.

B. Booted into Safe Mode with Networking and run Windows Update. Windows Updates launches and appears to run but never returns any results. I have double checked that my internet connection is in fact working.

C. Booted into Safe Mode with Networking and tried installing a device driver using Compatibility Mode. Compatibility Mode does not appear as an option on Windows 10 Device Manager.


I've repeated steps A and B above several times. And when I boot into Windows 10 normally, I still end up back at the black screen of death.


I am hopeful that Windows Update will eventually help. But I can't seem to get any results from it in Safe Mode with Networking.


Any suggestions for how to manually update Windows 10? Or to get Windows Update working?

Windows 7 black screen of death

I read a report a little while ago that said the black screens were nothing to do with updates but due to a malicious program (it hit more than just windows 7 users - vista, xp and 2000 were also prone to the black startup screen of death if infected). My windows 7 install is fully up-to-date and i've never had the black startup screen.

Just run some decent anti virus and you should be safe (i suggest microsoft security essentails since it's free and pretty decent). When you've installed an anti-virus i'd suggest doing a full scen to be sure there's nothing there.

Sounds like the old... windows black screen of death.

NO! That is not my problem. I used the link and the computer displayed again that black screen of death :'(
Anyway it has nth to do with sleep or screen saver. I just restart it and than again it appears the "STARTING WINDOWS" screen. If the black of death happens than it stayies like that for hours without responding. A friend of mine had the same problem, but he could pass through the black of death because he has a much more powerful computer than mine. Anyway, i dunno the answer :S
