Windows 10: Windows 10 Intermittent freeze / stuttering System PID 4?

A few months ago I purchased a new Dell Inspiron 13 5000. I was initially very pleased with it, but soon noticed Windows 10 was freezing intermittently for about 1-2 seconds every 12-15 seconds. The freezing does not crash the computer, but the scrolling is interrupted, typing text stalls then eventually catches-up, audio crackles, Copy/Paste commands not immediately registered. The freezing is temporary and the system later catches-up, but it is highly distracting and sometimes causes errors which I need to reverse e.g. accurate use of mouse for image editing.


I started researching the problem and downloaded Process Explorer to investigate. On review it seems the System PID 4 CPU spikes exactly around the time of my system freezing. See below screen-shot of the CPU chart with the spikes below. Unfortunately this is as far as I can get in resolving the problem. If anyone has any ideas on what is causing it, would be greatly appreciated.


Note, I'm using a Dell Inspiron 13 5000 + Intel Core i5 10th Gen + Windows 10 Home. The laptop is brand new and the problem has existed since Day 1. I have installed a few "common" programs e.g. Office 13, Zoom, WhatsApp, GIMP Photo editor. I'm an 'intermediate' computer user and so would prefer to avoid a full system re-set if at all possible. I also don't feel I should having spent a reasonable amount on the machine!

Win 10 CU (not FCU) stutters and freezes a lot with various operations

I get momentary freezes and stuttering with a range of Windows menu operations. *sarc These are the ones that are top of mind but I'm sure there are others. Win 10 Pro 64, up to date on patches.

• Xing out a FireFox tab
• Click on FILE menu (drop down is delayed)
• FILE > Print (printer list or print menu is delayed)
• Selecting a higher level on the file path in the SAVE menu
• Search menu at bottom of Windows
• Typing in many situations.

Any suggestions? Or this this a known problem in Win 10? I've had this problem for some time, but lately it has gotten me really PO'ed.*Confused

ive watch my temps and both the cpu and gpu are within normal ranges. when it freezes it simply freezes the image and stops the sound. i must reboot to get back to windows.

I suggest you run rthdribl > http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/archives/rthdribl_1_2.zip
Increase the window size step by step and watch your vga temps permanently.
What happens?
If it crashes, run at stock speeds as suggested before and retry.

P.S.: When your system locks, does the display signal turn off after a time?
Stuttering sound or no sound at all when freezing?
What X1800XT model do you own exactly?
