Windows 10 IPU Seemingly Succeeds Before Rolling Back

I am still in the "know barely enough to be dangerous" stage of SCCM administration and have been tasked with the upgrading of our organization's old Windows 7 machines to Windows 10. I have an SCCM task sequence that is working fairly well in most cases, but there has been a recent rash of roll backs that make little sense to me.

My Task Sequence downloads & installs driver files, selects the proper flavor of Windows 10 usually that's Enterprise x86, runs the IPU which takes a few hours to chug along and ends successfully.

Windows setup completed with exit code hexadecimal 0x00000000 decimal 0 OSDUpgradeWindows

    Windows Setup completed successfully! OSDUpgradeWindows

A reboot is requested, and here's the first hint of something going wrong:

RegQueryValueExW is unsuccessful for Software\Microsoft\SMS\Task Sequence, SMSTSEndProgramTSManager

    GetTsRegValue is unsuccessful. 0x80070002. TSManager

The reboot happens, and then there is a pause in the log 6.5 to 9.5 hours -- this is the biggest variable from machine to machine, not behavior, just the reboot time. The one machine we managed to get eyes on during this time had a very slow moving "Upgrading please wait..." dialog on the console.

The next log entry has TSMBootStrap.exe launching, it chugs through it's initialization for awhile before reporting:

Failed to start the CCM client. 0x80070422. OSDUpgradeWindows

That error repeats 10 times before being finalized with

Failed to start the remote control service. 0x80070422. OSDUpgradeWindows

The TS then continues, processing another reboot which returns quickly and has no issues on restart. When it gets to the Post-Processing step, it is skipped because the _SMSTSSetupRollback variable is not false.

My best guess is that in the 6.5 to 9.5 hour delay, the machine attempted to boot the new OS, failed, and rolled back the whole thing.

But where would the reason for that failure or any details about it be??????

    Thanks in advance!

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
