Windows 10: Windows 10 is no longer activated????

Here is my problem:

I was given this computer (desktop) as a gift and everything worked just fine, I was able to use windows 10 features and customize my background without the little "Activate windows" thing at the bottom right corner. I don't know how long it's been there now, but it wasn't there when I was first given this computer. Anyway, I just noticed it when I was trying to change my background screen on the desktop , but windows is saying it needs to be activated and It is not a valid windows or something. The weirdest part is that I have changed the background multiple times on this computer before now. What happened? How do I get this resolved? Will it cost money, and is it necessary to activate windows for other things to work properly. I am a college freshman with no job, so if there are any options that don't involve extra payment please let me know!

I'll revert back to windows 7 then.

When I still was on windows 7, about a year ago I added 4GB extra ram which is a total of 8GB now,
is that causing the problem?
