Windows 10 January Technical Preview build 99xx Change Log

Not too much going on here.

    Of limited interest...

Of no interest at all to me...

    Yawn....

Will have to see...as of my look @ 9901, cpl settings replaced do *not* offer the same degree of functionality as their explorer.exe counterparts. And, some of the explorer.exe stuff, which was better and allowed for more control of the environment, has been *deprecated*...! To replace these features with a different UI that is less capable and inclusive than the explorer.exe components on which they are based makes no sense to me at all...(crossing fingers that this won't happen)

Let's hope there's compatibility with the 6.x kernel scheme, else changing the number to 10.x will break some programs.

Has anyone heard as to whether or not Microsoft is going to extend the time-out on the previews to beyond 4/2015? Maybe that will be covered on the 21st. Since they've announced that 10 won't ship until the fall, it seems rather crazy to have the previews time out 5-6 months before the OS ships--especially in light of the fact that they've already said that most likely a user will be able to upgrade from the preview to the shipping version.

  2. I think that the issue has to do with the on/off button that each keyboard uses. If it's the num-lock then it might not work otherwise it might. I have a Corsair K40 and my on/off is separate from the num-lock. I think the issue is that the indicator on the keyboard doesn't lite up when Caps Lock of Num Lock is on? You can't tell if Num Lock is actually on or off just by looking at the keyboard. I have my BIOS set so Num Lock is off on boot up. I never use it so that way I know its off.

  3. I just hope they fix Metro Snap so its at least as usable as it is in 8.1. The last build of 10 that I used Snap was useless for Metro Apps on my monitors. Desktop wise it was better but they screwed it up on the Metro side.
Something else I really wish they would change is the requirement for a "Certified" Windows to Go thumb drive. We should be allowed to use any drive as long as its big enough in capacity. I'm referring to the official Windows To Go utility in Enterprise. And yes, I know all about the roll your own variants on the go. That's a whole other story that I won't bore you with in this thread.

I installed build 10.0.9901 on bare metal and hated it !
I took some precious hours trying to understand how it is supposed to work, but simply couldn't do simple tasks efficiently ...

That build was/is very buggy at best and MS dropped it fast, from my understanding.

You can't tell if Num Lock is actually on or off just by looking at the keyboard. I have my BIOS set so Num Lock is off on boot up. I never use it so that way I know its off. The issue for me is that all the keys on my keyboard are backlit, and so none of them have worked since the last official build. It's turned some of my typed sentences into alphabet soup. Hahaha

That said, it's annoying, but not a dealbreaker, especially in a preview build.

Yeah, that build was all kinds of buggy.

  7. This should be a good release - it's had a bit of time to mature behind the scenes.

They're packing everything into it - so it will be buggy

    10.0.99xx ??? Shouldn't that be 10.0.1 ? Oh well, it's they're release schema

Codenames are usually for internal use - but what is better than awesome?
    Ultra-awesome, Mega-awesome, Awesome 2.0 have been mentioned.
Awesome and Spartan are cooler than Metro (a train?) or Immersive (swimming ... therapy?)

The one I'm curious about, and Brink might have on this, is Continuum
    Wasn't Q from the Continuum?

MS won't issue the errata until the RTM - they'll only let us know what they're planning to put in a Preview Release.

Superfly, thanks for that screen shot. Glad to see that purple is gone, might help folks who are colorblind read what they're doing. I'm not colorblind, but the contrast on the Win8 style install screen was very difficult to read

    Here's a cool idea!
Download the 'Awesome' iso the night before the briefing, install it, then your copy goes live when they go live with the briefing and it becomes a briefing/tutorial all in one!
    No?
    Okay, just a thought. *Smile

I like it but the update might/should come first and then the ISO. It would be nice if the update was on the 20th but I doubt it., *Sad
