Windows 10 KB5001649 issues fixed, rollout resumes for everyone

Microsoft is resuming the rollout of the Windows 10 KB5001649 update after halting it on Friday evening. The tech giant published this cumulative update on Thursday (March 18) to address printer bugs for those running Windows 10 version 20H2/2004, but quietly stopped due to an installation bug that was hitting almost everyone.

Now, after spending some time squashing those bugs, the rollout of the KB5001649 update for Windows 10 is resuming, presumably with a fix in place.

According to Microsoft Update Catalog, the optional cumulative update weighs in at around 400MB for users still on February 2021 cumulative update. It is quite a bit smaller for those already picked up that botched March 2021 cumulative updates.

It’s worth noting that Windows 10 KB5001649 is designed to fix the remaining printing problems and it’s only starting to roll out, which means it’s only a matter of time until Microsoft starts pushing it to everyone in all regions.

According to our tests, the cumulative update started rolling out only a few hours ago (2 PM ET, March 21), it may take a few hours or one day before you see the notification on the Windows Update page, as shown in the screenshot below.

So far the users that did receive the KB5001649 update have reported no further issues.

What is Windows 10 KB5001649 and do you need it?

Microsoft is currently offering KB5001649 as an optional update for all Windows 10 version 2004, 20H2 users. It’s also important to note that issues addressed in this patch are very limited and only those with printer or printing-related drivers are affected.

If you have issues after March 2021 updates and you use printers, you’ll want to check and see if your machine is up to date.

To do that, open Windows Update settings and check for updates. From there you’ll be able to see this optional patch under the “optional updates” section.

If you choose to apply the hotfix, you’ll be applying a patch that only squashes various printing problems. Like all Windows Updates updates, this optional update requires a simple reboot.

Remember that it is a good practice to skip optional updates if you don’t have any specific issue addressed by the patch. All fixes are ultimately shipped in the next Patch Tuesday update.

  2. New install Windows 10 (issue solved)

It's good that you're not experiencing any issues. Unfortunately many folks are, a quick Google search will show the same info im offering the OP.

    Heres a couple examples:

    Here

    Here

It's basically what I mentioned above, small issues here and there ,but nothing to end your day.. for the most part.

I know it's anecdotal, but for my experience 95% of the time it's perfectly fine. The issues I've run into wouldn't be enough for me to roll back , but they would be enough (had I not installed it yet) ,to avoid it for another couple weeks which is why I'm suggesting it to the OP

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

    Windows 10 issues!

I had a similar issue but it only happen on older hardware, Windows would install the stock drivers which would make it nearly impossible to access the internet. Luckily I had newest Intel and Realtek NIC drivers that ran perfectly on Win 10 x64 1607 version, installing those fixed my that problem.

This also can happen on a non-fresh install of WIn 10, when you try to boot from a different computer/motherboard, after a single failed boot, Windows will try to re-detect and re-install all of the drivers, which definitely won't be the most stable or newest.

I tried everything, flushing cache, resetting router, uninstalling the device completely from the list, removing the LAN connection entirely, none of those helped.
