Windows 10: Windows 10 keeps booting to black before login despite repeated reinstallations that only...

I am x-posting from /r/techsupport (I hope that's okay).

I have an older Asus desktop PC with Windows 10 Home upgrade. Several times in the last few months now everything seems fine when I power down at night, and then in the morning I start the PC and it boots to a black screen before Windows can login. I can get into the recovery environment, but none of the repair/restore options ever work, including a repair install. The only thing that ever works is reinstallation from a bootable USB. Even when I go to the Command Prompt it can't find any installations of Windows, or even any of my hard drive partitions. I've tried rebuilding the BCD and all that to no avail. The only thing I can think of is a possible graphics issue (NVIDIA GeForce GT530) but the last time this happened ~2 weeks ago I updated all the graphics drivers and this still happened this morning. The only other thing I can think of is that my hard drive is failing - it's 1.5TB and partitioned into two, and ~7 years old now.

Any ideas here? I'm going out of my mind and can't save any files to my desktop for the last few months out of fear of losing everything.

[Solved] Windows 10 keeps reinstalling KB3119142

I noticed quite some time ago that KB3119142 (Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package) kept reinstalling itself for some reason. At least once daily. Sometimes up to several times a day. I just ignored it. It didn't seem to be doing any harm. And I figured they'd eventually fix it. Well...days turned into weeks, weeks into months, with no end to the problem in sight. It dragged on unsolved for at least the last few months. Literally reinstalling itself hundreds of(at least a hundred, felt like more) times in that period of time.

So I finally googled it a couple days ago. And just got around to fixing it today. Which appears to have worked. And it couldn't have been easier to do. I feel so stupid to have let it intimidate me for so long.*Oops!

I was having a slow boot issue on my Windows 7 install a little while back. It would take about 30 - 40 extra seconds to boot up for whatever reason.

I would try following these steps, while this didn't solve my issue, it did increase Read/Write to where it should be.

In the end, I had to reinstall my Windows 7 entirely to fix the booting issue. It was taking around 35 seconds to boot, and after the fresh install it takes about 7 seconds to boot.

 

How to reinstall Windows 10 if my computers used the free upgrade from 7 and 8?

Your ild keys should work but if you registered the key to your online ms persona (email address) it should be tied to your account , install without a key login with your credentials , then activate.
