    My suggestion: revert to the Windows 7 installation. Make an image of it. (I use Acronis True Image, but many have recommended the free version of Macrium Reflect.)

    Then clean install 10. It should automatically activate online, as you have already activated it at least once as an upgrade.

    You can turn off driver updates in Windows Update. I've done that, so that I can play with non-WHQL nVidia drivers.

    Peter I tried your suggestion with Ddu and the linked file
    i get the error 19 this hardware cannot start because it's configuration is either incomplete or damaged
    any ideas ?

    Peter have tried your suggestion twice now currently getting error 19 again with this message in the events box
    Device PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13C0&SUBSYS_111610DE&REV_A1\4&3535b5bd&0&0008 requires further installation.
    any ideas?

    Hi
    after my last attempt I was unable to go back to Windows 7 for some reason so I did a clean install as you suggested and after installing the network driver it installed the nvidia driver and it seems to be working.
    i now have to reinstall everything else.
