Windows 10: Windows 10 keeps trying to get me to update to 20h2 then undoing updates and fails.

Windows takes like 20 minutes to start downloading the updates, that it already knows exists. In fact it previously downloaded them twice now, (why do you keep downloading the same crap that's already been downloaded?) but none the less it decides to do it again. Then after like 3 hours it's finally ready to install them, restart, and I get some stupid message that windows is undoing all the changes it just made to my computer. When I get back to the desktop it reports that the install has failed.

Any ideas how to fix this? I've been notified that the life cycle of my current install is about to expire, whatever the hell that means. So I'm trying to be compliant but as typical of Microsoft as far back as I can recall it's always a major PITA to install any major update.

I just don't understand how Windows is so bad at this every single time. Every OS I've owned has been a nightmare to update since the days of windows 95 till now.

Yea, that was going to be my next suggestion, if "Safe mode" did not work... I didn't want to scare him just yet.. *Toast :toast: There is a new feature in Windows 8 that will let you go back to a fresh install with just a few clicks. It should help a lot non pro's to start over fresh. *Toast :toast: But this is no help to him.. *Toast :toast:

I had this problem with a vista machine. After a while I resorted to reinstalling the operating system (restore in this case)

Same issue as yours, it would download, install, then upon restarting it would start finishing the updates, and fail, then undo the updates.

Hi,

I had once a similar issue like yours, i.e. not able to update Windows 7. What I did to solve the problems is:

- go to control panel, then to "Troubleshouting" > "System and Security" > "Fix problems with Windows update" > click "Advanced" > choose "Apply repairs automatically".

And Windows will start detecting the issues and will repair "Windows update components". The problems should be fixed now, close the program, restart the PC, and see if the mentioned steps have fixed the problems you mentioned.
