Windows 10 laptop does not detect headphones/external speakers unless I restart with...

    Hi,

I understand that this is an issue that a lot of people have experienced and honestly, most of the advice given doesn't solve the issue for the people asking for help, and none of it has worked for me. I get the impression that Microsoft know this is a problem and simply don't care but here goes anyway.

When I plug in headphones or external speakers into my 3.5mm audio jack, my laptop does not detect them, it continues to use the onboard speakers. If I start the laptop with the headphones already plugged in, or restart it, they will be used. I've tried updating drivers for Realtek audio and it just tells me the drivers are up to date. The only device listed for audio output are "Headphones", but this doesn't seem to really mean anything as Windows either uses the on board speakers if nothing was plugged into the audio jack on start up, or it uses the headphone if they were. This is really irritating as it means I have to restart my laptop if I want to use headphones or external speakers.

Is there are reliable fix for this? I'd be really grateful if someone can help me out. Please don't just respond with "update your drivers" I've tried this repeatedly and it doesn't do anything.

    Thanks

    Will

    :)

    No Speakers or Headphones detected

    Hi,

This issue may have been caused by a corrupted Audio driver or defective audio port.

To better understand this concern please answer the following questions:

    • Are you still able to play music using a built-in speakers?
    • Have you tried using other headphones or external speakers?

We also suggest that you run audio troubleshooter by following these steps:

    • Type "troubleshooting" on the search box.
    • Select Troubleshooting on the result.
    • Click View all.
    • Choose Playing Audio then follow the instructions.

If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to post back.

  3. External speakers are not detected properly

The problem is that they are not detected as a separate audio device, like say a pair of headphones. The speakers have a 3.5 mm headphone jack and use the USB port only for power. When I insert the jack, sound do comes out through them but the system thinks that they are the internal speakers of the laptop. So it uses the same volume level, which for the external speakers is too loud compared to the laptops own speakers. What I want is for the system to see the headphone jack separate from the internal speakers and use different volume levels for the two devices. Such a thing I know is possible because is worked on Windows 8.1.

  4. Windows 10 laptop does not detect headphones/external speakers unless I restart with...

No external audio playback devices detected Windows 10... headphones, speakers, etc.

I have recently updated to Windows 10. I use my headphones fairly frequently, and I've noticed that the audio that plays through them after the Windows 10 upgrade sounds very tinny... almost as if the sound that is produced through the Laptop speakers is
heard through my headphones. The same applies when I plug in my speakers. The only playback devices detected are the laptop's speakers, even when my headphones and external speakers are plugged in.

The laptop I have is a three year old Toshiba Satellite C850D. How can I rectify this issue and have the sound quality as normal? I've tried updating the audio software so I'm up-to-date, but it's not done anything.

    Thanks.
