    A week ago, my computer was working fine until I restarted it for a windows update. When it came back up, my downloads folder as well as my general settings browser history/logins, file explorer pinned tabs, windows theme and other windows settings, etc were all removed and factory reset. Today, after it was all setup again, it restarted for another windows update and did the exact same thing. This is really infuriating and I can't imagine there is a way to recover my files, but I would like to not have this happen again in the future. Is there anything I can do to prevent that or is this a

    Try this method:
    • First of all from Start Menu, open Settings (Type settings in the search bar and it will appear).
    • locate and select “Update and Security“.
    • in this window, Locate “Advanced Options”. Click on it.
    • In Advanced Options; Click on “Choose How Updates are Delivered“.
    • Turn off Updates from more than one place.

    ^This, then reboot and go to manually update windows. Find KB3035583 in the list of available updates, right-click and "Hide this update" so it doesn't get installed again next go around.

    To stop the download, uninstall the KB3035583 update (under "Control Panel > Windows Update > Installed Updates").


    To get rid of the C:\$Windows.~BT folder:
    • Right-click on your C: drive.
    • Select "Properties".
    • Click on [ Disk Cleanup ]
    • After the initial scan: If you have a [ Clean up system files ] button, click it and wait for the second scan to finish.
    • Scroll down the list and look for "Temporary Windows installation files" (its size should be in the gigabytes range); check the box.
    • Click on [ OK ] to start the clean-up.
