  1. System (ntoskrnl.exe) using an absurd amount of memory

Process ntoskrnl.exe, listed as System on Task Manager has been using a lot of memory.

Windows 10 laptop randomly decided to start using absurd amounts of memory for everything,... 714c9055-367c-4700-b51a-b36fc15282d5.png

    (Please don't mind the Portuguese...)

    I've tried the following:

    • Update all drives
    • Run Malware Bytes
    • Run AntiSpyware
    • Increase/decrease the amount of virtual memory (paging)
These actions reduced the usage for a while, but it always comes back...

    My PC:

    Ultrabook Lenovo S400u

    Windows 10

    4 GB RAM

    Intel i5 1.7GHz

Any ideas on how to fix this permanently?

  2. System (ntoskrnl.exe) using an absurd amount of memory

    Hi Aksantana,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community.

I do appreciate your efforts and time.

Place the system in Clean Boot and try again.

This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. It starts Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.

How to perform a Clean Boot in Windows:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After troubleshooting, refer to this section "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" in the above link.

I suggest you to run Check Disk which performs an analysis of the disk. Refer to the steps below:

    • Press Windows key + X.
    • Click on Command prompt (Admin).
    • Type chkdsk /f and hit enter.
NOTE: The root drive has to be C: and the command may schedule a task at the system startup, if it does, then press
Y to schedule a task and restart the computer to perform chkdsk.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

Windows 10 laptop randomly decided to start using absurd amounts of memory for everything,...

Desktop Window Manager using an absurd amount of memory.

    Hi.

I ran the System Maintenance Troubleshooter but it couldn't find anything.

Then i followed the instructions in the given link, and ran the Windows performance recorder.

I ended up with the following file:

    GUNNER.08-11-2016.06-51-58.etl

That recording is from when i have just started the applications/programs i normally use when the issue at hand slowly begins.

I wanted to do another recording as well, when the usage was absurdly high, but i found something very interesting.

Every time i started recording, when the dwm.exe was at absurd levels, all the memory was cleaned.

Every process got their memory usage-levels to normal values again.

So i was unable to create the recording i wanted to, but instead i found that Windows performance recorder, every time i started it, did what i want Windows to do automatically (when needed).

    Example.

Dwm.exe was using 2,3GB of memory.

When i started recording with Windows performance recorder, dwm.exe immediately dropped to 32M of memory usage. All other programs that were using a lot of memory dropped their usage as well (Football Manager 2016 dropped from 1,4GB to 400 MB)

    I hope the info helps.
