Windows 10: Windows 10 Lean edition for devices with 16GB of storage

Hi folks
anybody tried to get this on to an external device and boot from it (rather like a mini "Windows to Go").
Could be interesting.

I'm also particularly interested if something like "Embedded Windows" / Windows "CE" or similar can be used - especially for Diskless workstations / thin clients.

I can flash a rom on an old PC to make it think it's a "Thin Client" - even if I brick the device it was on its way to the tip anyway so could be a bit of fun even if I break the PC.

With compactos on, and hibernation off, the install footprint is 6GB.

 

Running it from a Micro SD card, like my raspberry Pi's do, would be cool. My laptop won't boot from its SD Card slot though. *Sad

Remember if 32bit, it must be a legacy bios install. I just wasted all morning trying to get it to boot on HyperV as I set up vm as gen 2 by mistake and,I was blaming the iso creation tool and/or uupdump when it was my own silly fault (it is not as if I did not know this - lol).

 

You can use sd card in a usb adapter but really using sd cards is usually slow and unreliable anyway.

I believe you can create a vhd with OS and put boot entry on existing hard drive creating a dual boot version. Pretty sure that works for usb drives but less so for sd cards.

 

I haven't had any issues so far on my Raspberry Pi's. They run the OS from a Micro SD card by default. Only the 3B supports booting directly from USB. I'm not saying its not an issue, just that its been smooth sailing for me so far. It's handy for changing your OS on the fly and what the PI does. You just swap Micro SD cards.

 

Both my laptops (a Lenovo and a MacBook) will boot from SD card. I made a sort of manual Windows to Go on SD card it ran far faster than running from USB (but I only have USB 2). Seemed to work fine but obviously running from disk makes more sense for daily use if you are at home...

I was a bit worried about breaking the card due to too many writes (even though I disabled pagefile etc) though so stopped playing with it. I'd rather boot something that runs in RAM like PE.

How does the Pi work? Does it write to the card during use or load the OS into RAM and run it from there like a live disk or what?

 

The RPI does read and write to card. You can install it on a usb flash drive or even a hard drive but it still requires a boot kernel to remain in the SD card.

In the end, the RPI is not for heavy use and I doubt using an SD card can stand up to the demand of Windows long term.

I peerceive a fast 32+GB usb flash drive is a better solution in terms of reliability but do not have hard evidence to support that.

 

What he said, the Micro SD card is essentially the Pi's hard drive. The current Pi only has 1 gig of RAM. click my "My Computer" link in my profile. *Wink You can set it up to run from RAM, the default setup doesn't do that though.

For me, being able to boot from my laptops SD card slot would mean I could when needed boot from Linux to do Pi stuff, without having to mess with dual boot etc.

 

I'd suggest looking into getting an old Thinkpad off eBay then. I pad €100 for a i5 with 8GB ram. Boots off SD fine.
