Windows 10: Windows 10 License transfer

Hi, I'm trying to clarify a windows 10 license transfer question. I have been researching this question and I can't seem to get a concrete answer to my particular scenario. So any help here would be most appreciated.


I have an old Dell computer that came with windows 8.0 or 8.1 preinstalled. I did the free upgrade to windows 10, then later paid for the upgrade to windows 10 pro. (this is a digital license tied to my Microsoft account) Is that license/product key transferable to a "new build" computer that will replace the old Dell?


My research tells me, so far, that my scenario probably fits in the "original software (win 8.?) was an OEM", making the free upgrade to Win 10 Home, also bound then by OEM rules. But nothing I found clarified what happens when I purchased the Win 10 Pro "Upgrade". Or is it now considered, after installing on the original Dell, an "OEM" license as well?


But when it was purchased it show up as a "Digital" license linked to my Microsoft account, I should be able to transfer it to another computer. (or at least that's the impression I get looking at digital licensing rules). Isn't purchasing the windows 10 upgrade, considered a "Retail License", or do the rules change depend on the chain of licensing events as written above.


I'm hoping that I will be able to transfer the license/product key, given that the original computer is destined for the recycle bin.

i bought the license. My laptop was originally loaded with win 7 and was upgraded free couple of months.

in this case, if i understand you correctly, i can transfer with below steps. Right.?

let me buy my new laptop and try below.

and to my question do you have an update.

does OS upgrades if my activation key is changed.

Windows 10 upgrade license

The interesting question is that: the upgrade takes place before 29 of July. If I upgrade the PC (change the MB), and I transfer the Win 8.1 license to this new PC (cause 8.1 is retail FPP), will I be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free? Or a upgrade license must be bought?
