Windows 10 linux subsystem: Run Linux desktop directly?

I watched a video about the guy using Windows subsystem and run full Linux desktop without using remote software. There is no white thing on top. He can switch between Linux and Windows using a keyboard shortcut. Linux desktop is smooth, 60 fps, no lag so it means he don't use remote desktop.

I have been looking into this but i only found tutorials about using install Linux in Windows subsystem and use VNC or other remove desktop softwares which is laggy and have 16-bit color to remote Linux locally.

How did he run Linux desktop directly without remote desktop softwares?

  2. Windows Subsystem for Linux not available on build 14316

You need to be running build 14316 or later. Build 1511, is 10586 which does not have support the Linux Subsystem.

Windows 10 linux subsystem: Run Linux desktop directly?

Windows Anniversary has the option to run Linux bash commands, It's not as great as it sounds because since it cant access the Windows kernel there are many commands that will not work.

You can install the Bash shell on any edition of Windows 10, including Windows 10 Home. However, it does require a 64-bit version of Windows 10.

With that said if you want to install bash on Windows 10 Anniversary try this tutorial from TenForums.
    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4...e-disable.html

After installing run this command to update Linux Code: apt update && apt -y upgrade && apt -y dist-upgrade && apt-get -y autoremove[/quote] If you want to go further and use a Linux GUI after installing Bash try this tutorial

  5. Before the Bash commands and other support were seen added into 10 more recently with the 14328 build in mind to avoid use of any 3rd party program in order to run a bit more then just the desktop from some distro you would utilize the Hyper-V virtualization feature running Linux on VM. Hyper-V virtualization - Setup and Use in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

From the Youtube video there it would seem a bit more then Bash commands can be run by use of the new Task View feature that allows for switching between multiple desktops where you have some program(s) running on one while opening up another for a new task. That video is simply indicating that MS has also added in capability to run Linux apps to an extent on the Windows platforum in response to things like Boot Camp(Fruit company) and the open source community's own virtual emulators for Windows apps.

Besides virtualization and getting back on what else besides simply seeing the Bash console installed on 10 would be the wccftech blog seen back in April on this. How to Download and Run “Bash on Ubuntu on Windows 10” The blog goes into mentioning how MS besides the support for the Bash console included Ubuntu packages that were scheduled to be fully enabled by the time the Redstone 1 anniversary update was to be out back on August 2nd.

It is a youtube video with no details. I call BS. The subsystem does not work this way. It allows a minimal amount of Linux command line along with bash. It does not permit full installs of Linux, that has to be done with VM and I think I know how he did it. I am going to test my theory.

Windows 10 linux subsystem: Run Linux desktop directly?

Me too. If you look at the links in the comments everyone says it doesn't work and it is fake. If it wasn't fake he would explain how he did it.

It was never the idea to get a gui to work - the idea was for the shell.

Even the video looks dodgy - my guess is he is running Mint XFCE in a VM and just switching desktops between the 2.

If it is on Youtube or Social Media, it is usually BS. There are ways to run Linux under Windows or Windows under Linux. But you cannot run Linux as a part of Windows.

  13. Windows 10 linux subsystem: Run Linux desktop directly?

Well it is possible to run the gui portion as far as Linux apps go by way of the Bash command window as indicated in the wccftech guide posted earlier which takes you step by step through the process and even mentions that can eliminate the need for Hyper-V or some other VM ware in order to simply get the open source apps running on 10.

As for not seeing the Ubuntu logo on the Youtube video that should be a clear indication of something not being right as Ubuntu is the one distro seeing support added into 10 since Ubuntu has always been a more light weight often boot live type release while the Red Hats are left out for obvious server application and others like Debian are not compatible or simply much larger in size. Ubuntu is a more compact distro and found to be far more user friendly at times.

The magician behind the YT video most likely used Xming's X Server or X11 in Cygwin.

  15. Well the blog mentioned earlier from six months named the 14316 build as the one that brought in the Linux sub system in order to run Linux apps from the Bash command line.

The sub system being intended for Ubuntu which isn't a server type distro while what is reflected on in the video itself is what I had pointed as far as the use of a second virtual desktop without any particular 3rd party app being used. The Task View feature 10 has brought in allows for running scores of virtual desktops as long as the system resources hold out when pausing apps on one to move to another. The command line structure was also used for dressing up one of the two desktops seen in the video there.
