  1. Windows 10 local network problem

Please tell me how I can access from my laptop folders stored on my desktop.

Both computers use Windows 10. I have recently changed my desktop from one running W7 to a new one running W10. The desktop is connected by cable to a router, which provides a wifi network to which the laptop is connected.

I want to add to and view a folder on the desktop from the laptop. In W7 days this was done via a Homegroup. For some years I have had a laptop using W10 and I was able to Add a network location and the folder on the desktop I wanted to view appeared in the list of folders under This PC on the laptop.

Now I have a new desktop using W10. On the desktop I have given access to the folder in question to the laptop. If I try to Add a network location on the laptop, the desktop appears as an available network location, but will not allow me to select the folder on the desktop.

Either it insists that I enter network credentials for the desktop and it won’t allow me to enter a blank password, so I have to create a password for access to the desktop, which is not what I want.

Or, if I create a password on the desktop and enter that in the network credentials box on the laptop, a directory tree appears under the desktop name as a network location but the folder I want is not shown.

I am at my wits’ end. How it can it be so difficult in W10 to allow my laptop access to a folder on my desktop over a private secure wifi connection, as was easy with a Homegroup?

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

    Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Launch the Store from your Start menu.
    • Click the user icon next to the search box.
    • Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
    • Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
    • When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”
