Windows 10: Windows 10 Manual

I can understand why Windows 10 Manuals are not worth buying - there are too many small but significant changes on an ongoing basis. This is good.


That being said, for the past few editions of Windows 10 Microsoft has been messing with the simple LAN services in an increasing frustrating manner with NO guidance to us poor folks who struggle to maintain same. I have one gateway/router to my ISP which connects to two Windows 10 systems, an iPad Mini, an iPad Air, a QNAP NAS, an HP wireless network printer, an ASUS Access Point, and a RING Pro doorbell. While hardware upgrades by my communications provider (Rogers Communications) are easily handled, the Windows 10 upgrades have serious challenged the LAN settings with every Windows update. Each of my Windows systems are fully shared (my wife and I are the only users), guests can access only the Internet. I now have two systems which I am having trouble connecting for sharing purposes, and, yes, I have done the research on the Internet and at Microsoft to no avail. One system is version 1803, the other is version 1809. The 1809 system can see everything, the 1803 system can see everything EXCEPT it cannot see the 1809 version system. It doesn't show in the File Explorer window where it should under networks. I can force the issue each time by enter the //Sysname1809 but that's not really how things should work please.


This type of LAN setup - homes, very small businesses - should not have to incur heavy professional expenses for "experts" to come and fix each time. When Microsoft make extensive and important changes like this network business, they should publish a paper setting out the solutions to these problems as well as the optimum manner in which to re-establish the LAN correctly.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
