Not sure why you Don't see CLONE, it shows only for the selected Disk though, (box around selected disk also should be highlighted) but you don't need it ...

you will IMAGE the Disk by Checking the box on the left under the Harddisk Icon...that should automatically fill each Partition's checkbox too, for every partition on the Harddrive/Disk.

you could do a separate Image backup of D:\ incase you ever need it , and a separate Image of C: to save Windows , if you think Imaging the Whole Disk is not working correctly.

Macrium is on version 6.2.1549 now and your Rescue Disk should be made with the same version. You can not restore Windows without a Rescue Disk so it is Very important to make the Rescue Disk.

it is from the screen that shows the result, so it may be why.. on the left, it shows "backup tasks." on the right, it shows the log of the recent attempt to create an image. re: i want to know if the image partition to restore windows (even if selecting every part of disk 1 (including C, D), will only image Windows... while i want to know if imaging the disk is something different. i want to protect the disk prior to doing this. Then what is the difference between the rescue disk and imaging the partition for windows? How much space does the rescue media disk usually take? I am suspecting that i might need to buy writable media.. but what about dvd-r/rw?

    Joshua,
Please try making a new instruction set; don't save it to G, save it to your C drive - it's a very tiny file - it's only the instructions Macrium uses to create the actual backup.

That picture may have been an update since i unplugged the G drive, but i want to know if the image partition option for Windows only backs up windows, as opposed to the option to back up the entire drive. I have changed the settings already, but not tried to back anything up yet again. i know that i will need to try to make the bootable media, which i don't know if i can put that on a DVD, and how much space it will take up. RE: instruction set, do you mean the XML?

A DVD will work but the Rescue disk only uses about 275mb , so you can use a CDR if you have one....you already asked that several pages back......

The Rescue Boot Disk is so you can Run Macrium from the DVD/CD Disk later ...
it is not the Image of your hard drive , it is needed because you can not restore Windows while Windows is Running

Yes Macrium lost the XML as you unplugged your Passport G:\ by default Macrium keeps them in the Documents Folder usually so this doesn't happen, if you plug it back in it should work again....

Backing up Windows vs Backup Up the HardDrive on many systems is the same thing, as windows needs the other Partitions to Boot.

On your system it may not include D:\ as I explained in which case do a seperate backup of D as well to G:\ just incase you ever need to use that Recover Partition in the Future.

but if I choose all of those partitions of the hard drive when backing up windows, does it still back up all of the hard drive? or does it exclude some data? because I had tried to include D, etc.. but I had the wrong settings.. or will it only back up data to restore windows itself? will it back up applications, pictures, files, etc? or only when I do the specific image of the disk?

If you do a backup of the Disk it will save EVERYTHING on the disk except the hibernation file and the Page file which are not needed as windows will recreate them on Boot, it does this to save space.

The Image of the HDD is just that.... a "snapshot" of your exact system at the moment in time you click Finish and Macrium starts the Backup , that is what the VSS Service does ...it creates the "Snapshot" that Macrium Uses , so you can still use windows while MAcrium is making the Image.

    I am still not understanding.
I am a little confused. what is the difference? if you see the attached image, it shows those two options. one for imaging the disk, and one for imaging the partitions for backing up windows. I am worried that if I choose to the second one (Windows), that it won't backup everything, but if I choose the disk, perhaps it won't help regarding windows........ but I only have space for one. they both take up the same amount of space..

Joshua, just image the entire hard drive - every partition! Don't mess with the option to backup partitions needed to restore Windows - that's not what we're asking you to do. Just backup the entire hard drive - every partition - then create your rescue media, and make sure you can boot your system to it. Also, go into Other Tasks>Add Recovery Boot Menu Option and add Macrium to your boot menu. That way, you can boot to Macrium Recovery Environment without having to use the CD, as long as your hard drive has not failed.

If you don't have any disks to create the rescue media, then this boot option will be fine and we can proceed to get the backup image done, and then next steps.

that is because as I said in most cases it is the same thing on a One Disk computer.....just image the whole disk.... you don't really need to understand all the "whys" at this point just follow Simrick's settings instructions for Macrium and you should be good to go , and can move to the next step.

i have a question. when i tell it to prepare bootable rescue media, it also says it will prepare an image.. also, it has option for PE architecture required for bitlocker support. how much space will it take? is this something that also takes 142 GB, or can i use a smaller space disk for the rescue media?

i already made the disk image. but now i want to make the rescue media, and see if i can use discs.
