Indeed, so why bother installing K-Lite Codec pack at all? I install only MPC-HC standalone. MPC-HC comes bundled with the K-Lite Codec pack. I think it will also display PGS subs if you have

I haven't had any issues with MPC v1.7.7 whatsoever, (on WTP I might add, and I've put it through it's paces pretty good!)
(I like the windowless feature and still be able to navigate elsewhere)

  3. The problem is that some videos can't be fast forwarded (playback speed, chapters or dragging the progress bar) without the playback stopping for up to 5 minutes (or more)!
Those same videos don't have that issue in VLC.

That’s why I have both installed in W7 (currently I only have MPC-HC installed in W10 TP).

The last time this occurred I monitored what was happening using Process Explorer.
By the time I was fed up with waiting, MPC-HC had read 3GB from the HDD (the file was ~500MB). *Confused

Still things aren't as bad as 8 years ago when I was using XP.

IIRC, I had 6 different players installed (including WMP10, Real, GOM, DivX, I cant remember the names of other players).
It was the only way to ensure that I could play the majority of video files that were on the Internet.

Once I installed the K-Lite codec pack (with MPC-HC) I was able to eliminate most of the other players.

I just use VLC for videos and XBMC for movies, saves installing codecs.

  5. One of the first HD players I found that allowed the slider to move effortlessly even in MKV was Splash Lite

I used to harp on their forum about lack of PGS subs support. They said it would only be in the Pro version, never Lite. But in the feature list in the link it says embedded PGS subs. If so it may be worth a look.

    Hi there

Like all these things - just use what you like. VLC does have the advantage that the UI and behaviour is identical whether you use it on a Computer (running EITHER LINUX or WINDOWS -- don't know about Mac but there's probably a mac version too), a tablet or a Phone. VLC is incredibly good for AUDIO too -- also does COMMERCIAL DVD's (Libdvdcss descryption is already included), and can STREAM too -- good for smart TV's or even "Bog standard" TV's connected via any sort of input device.

    Cheers

I thought Windows Media Player has always supported MKV format and

if VLC and MPC-HC and other players can handle all of the formats, why can't Windows Media Player?

Windows 10: MKV support out of the box

    Hi there

I think some of the issues might be "Copyright" - for example playing commercial DVD's requires the use of a decryption algorithm. In SOME (but not all) jurisdictions a royalty fee is payable for the use of this algorithm. VLC has AFAIK reverse engineered it -- totally legal in some countries) and therefore can be downloaded FREE.

Things like FLAC for example are open source but there are other proprietary codecs that require the use of either "licenced" libraries or Non open source facilities which might require a royalty fee.

If WMV hasn't "coughed up" then it's no go for playing those codecs -- Ms can't put itself in the same category as VLC and other "Quasi Legal" players.

(Now whether or not this whole area SHOULD be open source - and the whole ridiculous regionalisation thing for DVD's be abandoned is another issue !!).

    Cheers

jimbo Isn't MKV open source? So, I find this a weak argument. And I hardly think anyone considers VLC and MPC as "Quasi Legal" players. Besides Media Center handles other formats. So all the "Copyright" mumbo jumbo (not to be confused with Jimbo), just doesn't set right by me.

Surely, Microsoft has the collective smarts to write their own Codecs.

    About time.
I guess it'll be good for novices.

Now, they need to add .flac, .tta, .ape, .wv, .ogg, etc.

Even if they do add them, I won't use their application anyway.

  12. I just tried running a .mkv file using Media Player in Win10 9860 and it does not run. I get the error message but hitting close and trying it again, it still fails. Anyone actually get this to work? My .mkv came from Handbrake.
I normally use Media Player classic.

MPC-HC & VLC are a little twitchy in my W10 TP VM.
I suspect it has to do with the graphics driver I have (or maybe I don't have) in LM17.

Simply clicking on an mkv file does not work. I had to install VLC to preview the files. Mkvtoolnix works rather well. No difference from Windows 7.

I never actually watch these videos on my PC - my Blu-Ray player does that job and the couch in front of the big screen is much more comfortable for watching videos *Cool

  15. The XBox One has become my goto home entertainment media player. I stuck a 3TB Seagate hard drive into a Rosewill RX-358 USB 3 Enclosure and put my moview and a bunch of TV shows on it. With voice command of "XBox On" I can turn on the console, A/v reciever, and TV, start up the Media Player Preview, choose the USB drive, select a category, and pick a movie. start it, stop it, or pause it, all by voice commands. 1080P, 5.1 surround sound, and excellent picture.
I am STARTING to use Dragon Natural Speaking 13 to control my PC using the mic on my webcam. Will voice take over from touchscreens?
