Windows 10 network - first computer up takes control of network

OK, I have a very specific question here. I am trying to get two Windows 10 computers to network properly. I've gone through all the usually published steps on the internet sharing, public/private, etc,, everything's updated. The network itself works, and I can share files, etc ... from one machine only. And it's always the machine that I boot up first, regardless of which machine that might be.

So, my specific questions are: why does the first computer to boot up seem to take control of the network, and allow me to see everything out there inlcuding my wife's Macs, and the other is usually, although it is inconsistent behavior unable to see anything.

It doesn't matter which goes on first - If Computer A comes up first, it controls the network, if Computer B comes up first, it controls the network. Whichever one controls it can see the other and my wifes Mac. The other one does not. On rare and unpredictable occasions, both might see each other, but it's pretty rare, and nothing I've done seems to have been the cause for working one time and not another.

Every normal setting is correct, as far as I can see, from having spent WAY too many hours screwing around with this Apple networks just come to life with little effort at all, especially on Ethernet. When is Windows going to get up to speed on this? It's also much easier to configure a Linus Network.

A colleague of mine says he recalls having had the same problem some years back, but can't recall much of the details of how he fixed it, other than thinking he had to get into the registry and fiddle with some DNS settings. That could be very wrong information though.

Anyone know how to get the computers to talk together as equals? And to keep doing so after that? I'm very perplexed and appreciative of any help!

    :)

  2. Help needed with simple wired network

Step one- Connect all PC's to router, and then the router to the modem. PC's go to router by the ports labeled "1-4" on the back of the router. WAN port goes to router. Power up all network equipment, and then systems.
Step two- Power on the computer connected to port one. Go into router settings at 192.168.0.1 and configure internet, dyndns, firewall, etc.
Step three- Go to "network set up wizard" in windows. (Network places- network set up wizard). The rest is self explanatory.
Step four- right click on each drive and printer you want to share, and then configure sharing preferences. Should be easy enough.
Step five- right click my computer, and the select "map network drive". Using the network address for each piece of hardware you shared, assign network drive letters.

Congratulations, you have a fully operational network. Happy Gaming! *Toast :toast:

I'll be adding a small page on doing this in windows vista soon, since XP is the same with a step or two less, i assume people will figure it out.
