  1. Windows 10, networks and NAS

    Hi All

I have two main PCs that I use on a home network, together with QNAPTS431 box. This setup worked reliably for years under Windows 7.

Since "upgrading" reluctantly to Win 10 recently I have had nothing but problems. Connections are slow and unreliable, dropping for no reason. If the machines are left on, its almost guaranteed that they will lose the connection to the NAS, resulting in Office getting confused I dont think my recent "upgrade from office 2010 to 365 is helping much either. Internet connections seem OK, its just the NAS and other machines although in the latter case not sure if its a problem that goes beyond the security on each machine as the error messages are vague or non existent

As a result of this I recently had persistent messages telling me that my PST file was corrupt - which resulted in me paying £50 for a 3rd party pst fixer as ScanPST didnt seem to be doing the job. It turned out I had a corrupt Outlook profile - so not impressed with MS error reporting.

So main network issue - I'm stuck - I've had years of dilettante MS experience dating back to Dos 3.3 and before, and was even a Novell admin at one point, but I'm no talented amateur, let alone expert.

The problem has gone in the past week or so from an unreliable and slow connection that is bound to drop if the machines are not permanently awake and working, to one that works occasionally, but is basically unusable.

Can anyone provide or point me at a walk through that would do the problem solving for me, or take me through a network reset from scratch, avoiding the various MS induced "security" issues that I have picked up from various threads on here.

Got to admit I'm at the end of my tether here, after a lifetime of MS products Win 10 and MS365 are driving me towards tearing it all up and going to Linux, or whisper it, even considering Macs.....

    :)

  2. NAS drive not showing in the Network after Windows 10 auto update this week

    Hello Charles,

Let's get your NAS device detected on your home network.

Kindly follow the suggested steps below:

Step 1: Disable anti-virus software and Windows Firewall.

NOTE: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software,
you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Follow the below steps to turn off Windows Firewall:

    • Press Windows + X, click on Control Panel, select
Category and then select Large or Small icons.
    • Click on Windows Firewall.
    • Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    • Click Turn off Windows Firewall (not recommended) under each network location that you want to stop trying to protect, and then click
      OK.
    If the issue still persists,

Step 2: We suggest you to reconfigure the NAS drive.

    • How is your NAS box connected to your computer? (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB)
    • Are you using a program provided by the manufacturer of your NAS box to access it?
    • Do you receive any error messages when accessing your NAS box? If yes, what is the exact error message?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

In the meantime, we suggest that you perform the solution provided by omiklik (Most Helpful Reply)
