Windows 10 new Dell laptop apps crash; MS store fails

Brand new Dell Inspiron 11...sweet little machine. I am a Mac user at work but needed this for certain apps that are only Windows. Major Windows apps like Calculator, Calendar and the like open then immediately close...even the Microsoft Store won't work. I am beyond frustrated. My last Windows machine was a 1998 Dell and these are exactly the same sort of endless, mind-numbingly frustrating OS issues that moved me to Mac...that was eighteen years ago. I have already wasted hours each day trying to Google a solution and nothing works. Honestly, how can this well researched and published major issue not be solved by now and why do I have to go deep under the Windows hood to try to some dangerous geeky solution that is likely to cause even more problems? So do I send this machine back to Dell, talk to a tech fake from Pakistan, or pay more than its price to hire somebody to make the basic things work?*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad*Mad

    :)

  3. Windows App Store will not run

Every time I try to open the app store on my brand new dell 2-in-1 laptop it crashes. I tried running the troubleshooter but that didn't find anything wrong. Help?

Hi KBHopper and welcome to Tenforums.
Sorry about your problems. I would suggest just doing a repair install using an in-place upgrade. It's easy, and should resolve your issues. Basically, you download the ISO from MSTechBench, right-click and mount it, then run setup.exe. It will maintain all your programs and files, and fix everything else in the OS.

    Hope that helps! *Smile

"download the ISO from MSTechBench, right-click and mount it, then run setup.exe."

I have no idea what this means. I went the reset route and it will delete the whole list of high end apps I spent about a day installing...I don't have the time for this and it is humiliating to have to nag my tech people for licenses and the like. I don't want to revert to a saved version that worked...it NEVER WORKED. I'm about to toss this thing out my office window. I have work to do and I have no inclination to become a Windows geek.

As I said, if you don't mind starting from scratch, the easiest thing to do is a reset. But, now that you've indicated you have it setup already and would rather not go through that again, then I recommend the repair install using an in-place upgrade. It's not difficult, but if you don't read the tutorial and just complain that you don't know how to do it, and you have no time, then I'm sorry, I can't help you and I can't do it for you.

Watched video, read instructions. Downloaded to USB 3.0 thumb drive...took a long, long time to download...double-clicked setup file on USB...little box with Windows graphic and the word "Windows" appeared on screen...nothing happening for more than an hour that I can tell...mouse pointer won't move...Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing. Locked up? Thinking it over? Pouting? Should I let it run...shut off and try again...sacrifice a chicken?*Confused

    Hi.
After the Windows graphic appears on the screen it should immediately show Preparing, then shortly afterwards, give you the option to download and install updates or not (select yes). It should not sit at the Windows graphic very long at all. I don't know how fast your internet speed is, but the ISO takes about 15 minutes on a 60MBps connection. I am wondering if your download is no good for some reason? I usually get the ISO from the MSTechBench page. It's important to get the same version and bitness of your system, or it won't work. Perhaps you can try that, and just save the ISO to your desktop. Then, right-click and select Mount, and run setup.exe from there. I just did this on a system two days ago, and it worked fine. *Smile

Manually turned off laptop and restarted process from thumb drive. Worked this time...until 8%...then hung. OK started over. Downloaded fresh ISO on faster connection, faster PC. Moved the file to flash drive and copied to desktop of new Dell laptop. Right-clicked to mount, ran setup. Worked...until 1% complete...then Windows 10 Installation Has Failed message. So started over...made it to 18%...same message. Tried third time...same cryptic message at 18%. I left Windows about a dozen upgrades ago to escape the endless frustration and time waste...no different for me all these years later. A new computer should be fun...it should work...right out of the box...it shouldn't cost you a weekend and then still not work. I think I'd prefer a root canal to trying to make Windows work on this machine.

For the record. When I wend my way through the Dell tech support resources, the little drop-down box for Windows issues sends me to...wait for it...Microsoft.

Dell are required to provide support for OEM-installed W10. If this is a brand-new system that came with W10 pre-installed, then that's wrong of them to send you to MS. Incidentally, if you request an on-shore agent, I think they have to, by law, oblige your request.

I am wondering if any of the software you have installed is somehow preventing the repair install from working? You are disabling/uninstalling any 3rd-party AV when trying this, right? But a failure that early on would normally indicate a driver issue. Or, a hardware issue - possibly a faulty hard drive.

On Dell's support site, you can run some diagnostics to make sure your hardware is not faulty. Perhaps you could try that?
    Support | Dell US

Plug in your system tag, or use the auto-detect to identify it, and run the tests to make sure your hard drive, optical drive, memory, etc. are all working properly.

Honestly, you shouldn't have this much trouble doing a repair install. Sorry about this. *Sad

Ran diagnostics. No issues. No 3rd-party AV. Yes, I think it probably is incompatible with something I installed...so what. Even an error code would help. I can reinstall Windows and wipe all my apps...then install then back one by one and see what happens...but I have a job and costs my company to have tech repeat the install work already done.

The IT support from your workplace should have set up the thing for you. They should be aware if an application is incompatible with W10. You shouldn't be doing their job. Why don't you perform a reset and let them do the installations? Even if you are off-site, they can easily do it remotely.

They do not support Windows 10. It is what came on the machine I bought. I use it for personal and for work things that don't run on Mac.

Okay so we know the hardware is in good shape, and you're not using any 3rd-party AV. I assume you've verified the software you've installed works with W10, yes?

Here's something you can try to troubleshoot what might be causing the problem, without uninstalling all your software:

Set the machine to perform a "clean boot". This means all 3rd party software startup functions are temporarily disabled, the machine boots only with MS programs, and we see if things operate correctly or not.
Clean Boot - Perform in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts - Windows 10 Forums

If things work properly, then we know some 3rd party software is conflicting, and as we re-enable them one by one, we identify the culprit. Sometimes incompatible software can be modified to work in W10 by using the Compatibility Mode feature, but we'd need to identify the particular software first.

Perhaps in the Clean Boot State, you could try the repair install once more, using the ISO on the desktop, mounting it, and running setup.exe. Once the OS is functioning properly, we can work on the 3rd-party software.
