    Windows 10 no administrator access

I just upgraded my laptop from windows 7 to windows 10. Before I upgraded, my brother created an account for himself and windows 10 seems to think that his account was the main one. He didn't have administrator access, so now I'm locked out of everything that requires administrator access.
When I try to install new software, the security pop up happens, asking for an administrator password, but there is no field to enter a password.
I can't open the command prompt (windows -> cmd -> enter)
I can't switch accounts, logging out lists no other accounts.

How do I get administrator access back, and how can I make windows stop thinking I'm my brother?

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Administrator Account-no access to files

    Found it!

    Got this from ghacks.net.

To enable the Windows 10 administrator account do the following:

    • Tap on the Windows-key. This should open the start menu or bring you to the Start Screen interface depending on how Windows 10 is configured on the system.
    • Type cmd and wait for the results to be displayed.
    • Right-click no the Command Prompt result and select "run as administrator" from the context menu.
    • Run the command net user to display a list of all user accounts on the system.
    • To activate the inactive administrator account, run the command net user administrator /active:yes
    • If you want to enable the guest account as well run the command net user guest /active:yes
The administrator account is active now which means that you can sign in to the system using it. It is not password protected by default which means that anyone with access to the system can use it to sign in to it.

However, you still have to use ctrl alt and delete to get the log out option. I had to do it twice to get it working.

    Best of luck,

    pte

Windows 10 Administrator Account-no access to files

    PTE,

Thanks for you reply. I enabled the hidden admin account but I was still encountering the same problems. It still did not have access to all files and applications on the computer. In fact its access was the same as the other admin account I created.
I understand that windows 10 will not allow more than one admin, so I need to figure our how to transfer as the access/applications for my home account to my business account.

    Windows 10 no administrator access

If you do Windows Key + R, then enter cmd in the run dialog. Then in the command window type net localgroup administrators

    What do you get?

Yep, you done deleted all administrators except for the built in Administrator account...

You can try these fixes - should be the same for Windows 10:
Lost administrator account on Windows 7 - Microsoft Community

Oh, and make sure you do a Power -> restart to actually get a full cold boot, that might be required to activate the Administrator account when no other administrators are present in the system.

I managed to enable the administrator account, but now when I go to log into the administrator account, It tells me
"Your account has been disabled. Please see your system administrator"

On top of that, it seems to have forgotten my microsoft account so now there is absolutely no way to log in, and for some reason the power button has disappeared from the login screen

Wow. So it looks like you have two options at this point. If you have a second installed hard drive, or an external hard drive you can use a Macrium Reflect Rescue disk/drive from another computer, boot the troubled computer with that, make an image of your current system, then wipe everything and start with a clean install.

or, if you have a big enough primary hard drive, you can create a bootable Minitool Partition Wizard disc, boot the troubled computer with that, shrink the existing system partition to make room for a new system partition and create a new primary partition and do a clean install of Windows 10 to the new partition.

Unless someone else can come up with a way to hack into your no user Windows 10.

  11. Well, I have the same problem - but, I'm logged in as "Dan":

    C:\Users\Dan>net localgroup administrators

    The command completed successfully.

While it says I have unrestricted access, I don't. I can't do a darn thing that requires administrative access.

I have the same issue as you Dan. My account is the admin account, when I view my user account it says I am the administrator yet I can't do anything that requires admin access.

I ran 'net localgroup administrators' and got the exact same results as the others.

This all started when I enabled the built-in admin account (net user administrator /active:yes) so I could get past the error message: 'The requested operation requires elevation.' -even though I'm logged in with my microsoft account. This caused my admin account to be disabled so I changed it back to ..../active:no.... I eventually had to do a system restore to get it back to where it is now.

I followed the quoted link and all it's telling me to do is boot into safe mode to disable the built-in admin account albeit with a recovery disc. Right? And I did that except not with a disc. It's still not letting me run anything as admin. This is probably the most frustrating time I've ever had with an OS.

Will enabling the built-in admin automatically delete the other user accounts? Because I didn't intentionally delete anything.
At this point I'm not opposed to doing a clean install.

edit: I was able to create a shortcut to admin command prompt:
    Right click on desktop--->New--->Shortcut
Type the location of the item: cmd
    Click Next
Type a name for this shortcut: Elevated
    Click Finish

    We'll see where I get with this.*Biggrin

  15. I was unable to run an elevated command prompt. I was unable to do anything, except make a copy of my important files, and make a list of my installed programs. (Because I couldn't run task scheduler, I couldn't list the command line parameters for some cygwin jobs I run, so I had to recreate them.)

However, my problem is finally solved. I threw in the towel, wiped W10 and reinstalled W8.1. I'm just about back to where I was before this debacle started. I have to agree with the poster who said, this was the most frustrating experience I've ever had with an OS. Was I stupid enough to upgrade to W10 without having a secondary administrative account? Yes. But, apparently I'm not alone, and this is a hole into which many people are going to fall. It's unconscionable for M$ to permit you to undertake the upgrade without forcing you to create a local administrative account, or at least warn you. My $0.02, your mileage may vary.
