Windows 10 Nosiy Hard Disk The Norm ?

I updated W7 in an old PC and got irritated too much with the hard disk ticking away endlessly like no other windows OS i had ever used right back to W98. I then got a new HD and did a fresh install of windows 10 and of course the same noisy hard disk activity carried on. The PC then went pop and i had to buy a new desktop with W10 obviously pre installed and of course the HD ticks away like before on W10. Done all the troubleshooting throughout and there was no issues.

So, i can only determine that this hard disk activity is a rather annoying feature of W10. Looking at the resource monitor you can see all the system files listed ticking away and obviously whatever browser is being used.

I reckon around a good 60% of the time during PC useage its ticking away and rather annoying.

Microsoft community has old posts detailing the same (not 100% useage stuff) no real answers given.

    :)

I have received communication that my windows 10 is downloading. When I click on check progress of downloading I get a screen that says: "there is something wrong try again later". This same message has not changed in over one week! I took my HP Notebook
to a Microsoft store in Atlanta. They checked to see that all past updates to windows 7.0 had been installed. This was confirmed. The person then ask me to go home and click an "install" icon as all was now ready! Again I got the same screen saying downloading
was in progress, but again nothing completes. As before when I click on check progress, I get the same screen that says; "something went wrong try again later!

What do I do to re-set the windows reservation or whatever?

Download the Media Creation Tool to create a DVD or flash drive installer for Windows 10.

Hi - not in my experience. When idle, you should expect 0 activity most of the time.

Please post a screenshot of your task manager, organising any columns of interest high to low by clicking on the relevant column tab. Repeat for different columns if useful.
To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post to the left of the video icon. Thanks.

Repeat in Safe Mode for comparison, and after a clean bootPerform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Performance Maintenance Tutorials
    (part 1)

And just to check your disk- post a screenshot of Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) showing any relevant disks.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to TenForums @UTS

Windows 10 has a number of background tasks that can cause disk activity. Rebuilding the indexing is one, another is compatibility testing ahead of a new version being released (the Fall Creators Update is due to launch on 17th October). There are other maintenance tasks too (Defender does periodic scans, for example).

These types of activities should stop once they have done their job. If the disk activity doesn't stop after an hour then something needs investigating.

I'm going to try not using chrome browser as that's been a common denominator in my various situations.

    Or delete and reinstall etc

Windows 10 Nosiy Hard Disk The Norm ?

It's not the norm, mine has been same since Windows ME some 15-16 years ago, about 1-2% CPU utilisation at idle.
There are however 100-200 settings in Windows 10 that need looking at. Settings > and power your way through the pages.
You can use the Task Manager as well to assist in this.
An old PC with a lack of RAM and an older processor does not help either.

Probably little point in experimenting until we know what the task manager shows is happening... some evidence.
