Windows 10 not accepting my product key from Windows 7 (0x004f050)

I upgraded my Windows 7 by running the ISO setup from a USB stick. The upgrade was no problem, but after some days using Windows 10 and having some driver issues, I decided to do a clean install. I booted from the USB stick, and when I was asked for a Product code, I entered the product key from my Windows 7. For some reasons it was not accepted, and I get the error code 0x004f050.

I even tried the Windows 10 product key (used a script to retrieve it), and that key failed to.

One other detail: I swapped my HDD prior to the Windows 10 clean install (but after the upgrade), have booted the Windows 10 installation at least once with the new HDD. Could that have caused a problem?

    :)

Windows 10 Home to Pro upgrade with Product key bought from re-seller

    Hi,

I've got a brand new notebook coming with Windows 10 Home edition. I've bought a Windows 10 Pro key from re-seller.

When I'm trying to change Product key in Settings->Activation->Change product key it shows error: "The product key that you have entered didn't work. Check the product key and try again, or enter a different one (0x004f050).".

Is my product key wrong or the process of upgrade is different?

    Thank you!

  3. Windows 10 Reactivation: "Can't connect to your organization's activation server"

It was Windows 10 Pro, and I followed the directions from the page you linked, and it was still Windows 10 Pro. I looked up how to downgrade to Windows 10 Home from Pro and did that, and it worked. When I went to Settings > Update & security > Activation,
    I saw this:

"We can't activate Windows on this device as the previous version of Windows was not activated prior to upgrading to Windows 10. Go to the Store to buy genuine Windows. Error code: 0x803F7001"

I tried to reactivate it anyway, because why not at this point, and I got "The product key you entered didn't work. Check the product key and try again, or enter a different one. (0x004f050)". I checked ProduKey, just to see if it gave me a different product
key now that I was on Windows 10 Home, and when trying to reactivate using that key, I got the same error (0x004f050), so I'm assuming the key I have actually is for Windows 10 Pro?

After you do the upgrade, you can clean install windows 10
When ever your asked for the Key - just choose SKIP
    Do Not enter any Key

You need to first upgrade your computer then activate it.

THEN, you will be able to clean install using an ISO or the "Reset this PC" button.

  6. He did that. Did you read the post? *Huh

During the clean install, when you are prompted for the key, underneath that select 'Skip this step' and you'll be fine.
