Windows 10: windows 10 not activating

I was given this Sony Viao (VGN- FW373J) laptop. It originally had Vista on it, then windows 7 Ultimate was installed (not sure if upgraded or clean install). I wanted to install 10 on it so I did but I did the clean install....going off information stating that I could do a clean install and using the windows 7 Ultimate key would work and activate it. It doesn't....I get the error message that: "this device doesn't have a valid digital entitlement or product key. Error code: 0x803F7001"

It didn't come with any of the rescue discs and when trying to make them....message said that they had already been made. Which was really weird. So what do I do now?

It was a product key yes. And it is activated on the same motherboard. I did update the motherboard though yesterday.

The only stores that are registered to sell Windows 10 licences are MS Store and Amazon.

Did you activate using the old motherboard originally and now you are trying to activate on a new motherboard.?

Do you know if the licence was a full retail licence or OEM. (is it a Windows 10 licence key)

Well, since the free upgrade from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10 has expired, looks like you will have to purchase a license for Windows for it.

Just curious, though, did you install Windows 10 Pro?

 

Yes....It's Pro. Well...darn, that sucks.

 

Yeah, everybody went back to the standard rules for Windows activation when the free upgrade program ended on July 29th. You were just too late to take advantage of the offer (it was for one year after Windows 10 released to the general public at the end of July, 2015). Windows 10 Pro is $200 for the full package product. Microsoft dropped upgrade pricing and licensing. At least they dropped the FPP pricing to the level of upgrade pricing for previous versions, so no price disadvantage there.

I'm happy to report that switching to the fast ring this laptop is now activated and fully updated......I don't understand it ....but hey, I'll take it.
