Windows 10: Windows 10 not recognizing Seagate 5TB external drive

I bought a new 5TB Seagate external portable backup drive. Windows 10 would not recognize it. Windows 10 Device Manager could see and name the device, but when doing 'create and format' the disk, the screen went blank. It even froze the PC. Many other problems materialized such as mouse not working, and even the PC screen went totally blank.

I also reported this via the MS Community but cannot now find my entry, and cannot find another way to just advise other users.

After many hours of trial and error, there was no way I could utilize this drive. I contacted Microsoft support and they also tried hard to find the problem, so far without success. I then tried Seagate support direct and was asked how I was connecting it to my PC. I was connecting it via a Multi-port USB connector. She advised me to connect it directly through it's own direct connect USB port. This solved the problem.!

My 5TB Seagate now works fine, is recognized and reconfigured to NTFS.

It is thought that because of it's size 5TB and perhaps the speed, the Multi-ports do not work correctly. I tried two different types of Multi-port and neither of them worked properly. Both of the Multi-ports work perfectly for a Samsung 1TB drive.

We would like to more about your issue for us to better understand the situation. Please answer the following information:

• Have you tried accessing your external Hard Drive on a Different PC? If yes, was it recognizable?
• For clarification, you hear something or a sound inside of your external Hard Drive? Is that correct?

Windows 10 Backup Not recognizing Seagate Desk External Drive

I have tried your suggestions with no success or change to my problem.

Here are answers to your questions:

1. My computer is an EMachines ET1331G-034w

2. Have not changed any settings.

3. Windows Backup says that no external hard drive is detected.

I did try one additional thing. I dug out my OLD WD external hard drive just to check. Surprisingly to me, Windows Backup does recognize it, but not the much newer Seagate drive.

Surely there must be an answer, especially since the Seagate drive was working perfectly before updating to Windows 10.

Windows 10 Backup Not recognizing Seagate Desk External Drive

Since upgrading to Windows 10, Windows Backup will not recognize my Seagate Desk External Drive. The Drive is recognized in Windows Explorer, but not in Backup. I have tried the support options from Seagate which has not been any help. Is this something
specific to Windows 10, or is there a solution to be able to use this drive for Windows Backup purposes?
