    Windows 10 off line

    Hello,
I'm looking for some general information about required updates on Windows 10. It seems to me that I read that you are required to keep your Windows 10 machine on line, and that even if you have Pro, you can only defer updates for 4 months and after that you get no patches what so ever.

I don't really know if that is true, and what the implications are for my particular situation.

We run a seasonal computer center , where our computers are unplugged and off line for 9 months a year. Is this allowed under the new Windows 10 paradigm, or is Microsoft going to consider us outlaws if we accept the Windows 10 upgrade and then don't do updates often enough?

    :)

    Windows 10 off line

The released version of Win10 has just today been out for 3 months so haven't seen any actual history on that requirement yet.

I have worked with a couple of clients that didn't pay attention to the need to be online at least once a month to keep Office 365 up to date or go through a process to affirm the subscription, wasn't a big deal but neither one had to patience to do it themselves.

There is no requirement in the Terms and Conditions for Windows 10 to connect the computer to the internet at all. That's one reason why the phone activation process is written into the software.

What I read, was probably somebody combining bits and pieces, with insider ring updates combined with CBR updates, it did make me worry though. MS is really screwing with me, on my own machine. I really don't like having to close every window everytime I get up from my computer. My habit is to hibernate, and when I get a windows notification of updates, I close everything down, update restart and resume. This new rule that you have to close down all your windows everytime you get up from your computer if you are not sure you will be on before bedtime is the pits. I have lost more work in the last 3 months than I did in the past 20 years and this isn't even my daily driver, its just a test machine!

    Thanks for your help.

    Windows 10 off line

You are kidding right? Or maybe my name didn't convey that I'm a homemaker. I use a windows Home version because I don't need to connect to a domain, nor run VM ware. I'm connected via Ethernet. I have set the W10 to restart at 3:21AM because that is as bad a time as any.

As a Home user, at home, I'm never, ever certain that I will get back to the computer before 3:21AM to close down applications, record all my findings, record which windows are relavent to what I'm doing, finish up all unfinished business. Its home, I'm open 24x7. I was used to using my computer whenever I found time, morning, noon, night, heck even 3:21 AM. Since testing W10, I've lost a lot of my stuff. I've lost a movie that was rendering because I forgot to come back 40 minutes later. I've lost several hours of genealogy research with a corrupted database. I've lost a bunch of notes I was taking... So the rule has to be, close down the computer everytime you get up, to handle whatever household crisis is dragging me away from the computer.

My Uninteruptible power supply and the old notify me before updates are downloaded and installed, is not going to protect me anymore. I have to treat the computer in a completely different way than I've been using it for the past 20 years. It is no longer my tool, its Microsoft's and they will punish me if I forget to run down to the basement unhibernate my computer and close all my applications before I go to bed, no matter how tired I am.

I've been slapped around by Microsoft enough since August to know that yes the rule is everytime I get up from the computer I need to close down every single application that I care about, be it my browser, my movie editor, my genealogy database, notepad, photoshop.

I'm a lowly home user, my workproduct doesn't matter, nobody can trust me to keep my computer uptodate, I must deserve to be treated like an IDIOT!

Oh sorry, I didn't mean to scare anybody. I'm just frustrated with automatic updates. I wish I was an enterprise.
