This is why i choose win 10 pro, you have more control on what you can turn on/off.

As a side note i just upgraded to 1709 from 1703 whithout a issue, AFAIK, hopefully the upgrade process is getting better.

Of course, you conveniently omit biggest 'better than linux' ie vast range of applications that run in Windows that do not run on Linux. Linuxians will never admit as a general purpose tool it is vastly inferior to Windows.

    Good morning Cerberus*Smile
i think you refer to me since i did the list, the intent was to talk about the OS per se not the whole ecosystem
and, i understand it's a corner case, i do not need the applications not supported ATM, but i understand your point.
Notice that also more major points for linux did not make the list, because the focus was on how they work, not the
ecosystem/advantages, like linux is free/open source you can install how many times you want etc.
i'll update the list, if you find other missing points let me know.

Abe I agree on the Windows Media not being able to watch DVD's like you can on 7, but problem with 7 I ran into a lot was CD Rom not recognized by Windows. I replaced the CD Rom twice, work fine for 3 months and back to Windows does not recognize it.
I am wondering if I will have that problem with this 10.
I do know that the CD Rom wont let me use my printer disk, I had to go to Canon website to install the driver for my Canon Pixma MG 2500 series printer.

  5. Hi,
Now why would you say that @AddRAM didn't say 10 sucks *Confused

7 is more stable than 10 will ever be
    10's update system insures that.

I'll grant you Windows 8 was a weird departure from 7 with it's full screen metro interface...but "10" is not like that at all! The start menu is actually very nice to work with...what's the big deal...so you click on a "tile" to launch an app instead of a word like on the older versions of windows (actually the tile has the name as well)...I have home edition, and i don't feel like i am missing something major by not having Pro..

Windows 10 is the last version of windows and i think it's the BEST version that has ever come along...I used to try out each new version of windows and then hopped back to linux again (usually ubuntu or linux mint) but after installing10 i found i didn't need to go back to linux anymore because windows finally arrived (in my book...LOL)...

You should give it a fair chance...i think after you work with it for a while, you will find yourself liking it a LOT and you won't even miss not having 7 anymore...*Smile

Windows 10 is really a lot of fun to work with...i don't even miss not being on Ubuntu anymore....Plus: so many more programs and apps you just can't get on linux, unfortunately...

This is my Win 7 lappy, this ACER took some punishment from hitting the floor, and still boots up.

""Random" Vanishing of files and folders
"Random" behaviours forcing to reinstall reset re-image etc.
    "Random" reboots" *Huh

Not experienced any of these problems, not once. I must be "just lucky" or have my system set up ok.

As for playing DVD's I have no problems playing them and watching on Win 10. I use media player classic.

I also have all the "metro" guff switched off or blocked, don't use any store apps, and have StartIsBack ++ installed
Oh and use Spybot Anti-Beacon telemetry killer. All on a local account.
I just wish the O/S was as easily customisable as W7

Maybe i'm just unlucky, but if you want a bit of experience try as below:

you need 2 pc and usb HD

1 PC_A enable fast boot (if not already enabled) and turn off PC_A
    2 plug external usb HD
    3 turn ON PC_A
4 change drive letter to high, let's say "T" on exterak USB drive
    5 turn OFF PC_A
    6 unplug external usb HD
7 PC_B enable fast boot (if not already enabled) and turn off PC_B
8 plug the same external usb HD with drive letter T
    9 turn ON PC_B
    10 turn OFF PC_B
    11 unplug external usb HD
12 plug external usb HD in PC_A
    13 turn ON PC_A
14 copy a couple of files (or more) from PC_A to USB "T", file_a and file_b
    15 turn OFF PC_A
16 unplug USB "T" external HD
    17 plug USB "T" on PC_B
    18 Turn ON PC_B
    19 Browse USB "T" no file_a and file_b found

Apparently it was the high cost of the MPEG-2 licences that led to the removal of the ability to play DVDs. I knew this was coming so before the 2015 launch of Windows 10 I installed VLC on my Win7 laptop. As it happens, for a limited time (as a sop to those of us upgrading from a Media edition of Windows 7) Microsoft issued a free install of their DVD Player app through windows update. So I have two ways I can play DVDs in Windows 10.

I have used almost every version of Windows since Windows 95, and it is true that W7 was an excellent OS, so was XP, but after switching (reluctantly) to W10 a short while after it's launch, my experience with W10 is nothing but brilliant! I honestly would never go back to any older Windows OS.
As regards Linux, I tried Ubuntu once and absolutely hated it. I also own a late version 21" Apple Mac, which is an OK system but has many fiddly short comings, and will never replace my Windows 10 PC for any real work!
We all have feelings/opinions regarding which is the best OS, the above is mine!

Have you at any point done a clean install in your upgrade route from 7? If not I would strongly consider it to iron out any possible issues caught using the multiple upgrade hoops from 7-8-8.1-10. Then give 10 another trial period.

In my own experience, 10 does perform better than 7.

I recommend using Rufus for that. It has worked perfectly fine for me so far. Just use the Media Creation Tool to download the ISO image. Then use Rufus to put it on an usb stick.

Have you all tried using another computer to download the Media Creation Tool.
I used Win 7 laptop, plugged my Seagate Free Agent in, clicked to format, when it finished, right clicked on the Media Creation Tool, started download to the Seagate, It took 9hrs to download, I went to bed after it came up verifying, woke up. hooked it to this HP and it installed.
