Windows 10: Windows 10 "Out of Memory" error msg, plenty of V/RAM

Frequently when I am playing Cities Skylines or other RAM-hungry games, in the middle of playing I will get a message saying that the computer has run out of memory and I need to close the program. This happens most often with C:S because I have a large number of custom assets in use, but it's happened with a couple other programs lately as well.

Naturally, I have a process monitor up while I use the computer and I can see that while a great deal of my RAM is in use, up to 30GB at a time, my VRAM is typically below 30% usage even under load. So it strikes me as odd when my computer says I am out of both RAM and VRAM when this is patently not the case.

I'm not really sure where to begin with troubleshooting this error. In the most recent occurrence, my display drivers crashed and I had to reboot my computer, which leads me to suspect it has something to do with the latest drivers from nVidia. I'm not sure how to pin down the exact point of failure, though.

Sorry guys, I've been away. My SIM is about 3 years old, I've spoken to the service provider but strangely enough it hasn't happened since and it's been about a month now so I might leave it for now as I'm waiting on the Lumia to be released in Australia
and then just order the micro SIM rather than changing this one and then getting another one, thanks for the replies though.

That message can happen even when you are not actually short on it. Improper address or too little of virtual memory can also cause it. Some drivers may also cause it.

 

I can't say for certain about the improper address but I have 32GB of VRAM (system managed setting) so we can probably rule that out. This did start happening around the same time that I updated my GPU drivers but I'm unsure what last version before I updated was.

 

I assume by VRAM you mean the pagefile. Just to clarify since VRAM is not standard terminology in this context.

When you get the high memory usage, you can run these tools to figure out where it's going:
VMMap - Windows Sysinternals | Microsoft Docs - Shows memory breakdown for a single process, e.g. Cities
RAMMap - Windows Sysinternals | Microsoft Docs - Shows memory usage for entire system

Save the files (File->Save) and post them here if you want us to take a look.

 

VRAM is also name for memory used on video cards, VideoRam, typically DDR5 nowadays.

 

30 GBs sounds excessive so exactly what is a "large number" of assets and/or mods ?? Also is there enough space on your OS drive for the amount of set pagefile ? One tip on Steam Forums is to try setting your pagefile min/max both to 3 times your installed memory. We quit Gaming here and after reading the complaints kinda glad we did considering the cost of RAM

 

Yep, pagefile. I'll run those tools and get back to you. That said, I know exactly what is causing the high memory usage - it's the custom assets that Cities Skylines puts into memory when I load my savegame. The thing that's throwing me is that it has not been a problem until recently and I can't figure out why.

"Large amount" meaning just under 5100 assets. I do have enough space on my OS drive for the pagefile and then some. I've not had any problems with the pagefile just being set to system managed size until recently.

 

Well, I ran RAMMap and VMMap - unfortunately, trying to save the RAMMap data just results in the thing crashing to desktop, so all I have for you is the VMMap data.

I can say for certain that Cities is using 25/32GB RAM, which is not unusual given the amount of Workshop assets I have loaded into the game. My system at idle has about 5GB of RAM in use, and combined with the rather large pagefile I don't see any reason why Windows should pop an error message saying I'm low on memory when I decidedly am not.

 

Honestly at first I didn't believe you have you could be using that much memory but apparently you are. Performance must be horrendous if you're using 32GB of pagefile.

Just to confirm, how large is your pagefile? It looks like Cities is currently using about 32GB of paged memory.

Have you tried manually increasing the size of the pagefile to, say 48GB? I haven't found clear documentation about how Windows automatically adjusts the pagefile size so it's possible that it may not be increasing it past 32GB due to some internal limit.

 

I know nothing Cities Skylines but I did find this. It does seem like Cities Skylines can suck up a TON of memory.

Yeah, CSL sucks up a ton of memory when you get enough assets loaded in. Usually just letting the system manage the size of the pagefile works - I had it set up so 16GB of pagefile space was on C:/ and the rest would be system managed size on another SSD that was set up for purpose as more pagefile space. It worked fine until lately!

I'll see about bumping the pagefile up to 48GB, but the weird thing is that the most pagefile usage I see on my live system monitoring is around 30%.

 

A tip: setting the Custom size for max and min as the same keeps the paging file clusters contiguous and can improve its performance, saw it a lot on Win7. The written recommendation in Windows Help for Virtual Memory used to be 1.5 times the physical RAM, earlier versions was 2.5 times. And it also recommended for memory-intensive applications to set it even higher.
