    Windows 10 PC freezing randomly

hi, I have been running windows 10 for the last 12 months with no issues, however in the last couple of days, I have noticed all Apps are considerably slower when opening and when using PowerPoint 2016, the PC freezes after approx. 30 seconds. Control , alt, delete doesn't work, I have to switch the power off and then reboot.
I have run a memory and SFC / scannow test with no errors, help would be greatly appreciated.

    :)

    Windows 10 PC freezing randomly

Hi start with this to check your disk and file system:

Download and run Crystal Diskinfo (free). Advise the result - Good/Caution/Bad
    Do not proceed unless good.

Download and run Crystal DiskMark and post a screenshot of the result to check transfer rates.

    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

Please post a screenshot of your task manager when your PC is nominally idle.
If resource use is significant in any column, organise this high to low by clicking the column header.

Please complete your system specs including disk details as far as you can.
(Use e.g. Speccy, free). (See mine for comparison).

    Hi Dalchina

    Thanks for responding, I have attached most of the info you asked for;

    Crystal Diskinfo : Result Good

Crystal DiskMark : I downloaded this and run a couple of files, one had stars continually running, the other shapes. Couldn't find where the results were stored. Can you provide a direct link to the actual file

    chkdsk C: attached

    Task manager: attached

I cant see how you can add further info to the Spec other than the default questions.

This may also be causing part of the problem, when I'm editing a power Point presentation, after approx. 3-4 minutes it slows down and then totally freezes.

I have tried a Clean boot and the problem exists.

    Hi, your disk seems good.

Thanks for the task man screenshot. The only thing that stands out there is BT Cloud- why is it using so much CPU time? I suggest you disable that for now and see if there's any change.

The other thing that occurs is it would be great if you can capture your task manager when the system is slowing down. You'd need to have it already running, and the easiest way may be to capture the whole screen, then paste the clipboard into e.g. Paint.

Now if the problem still exists after a clean boot, next to try is Safe Mode. (minimal drivers, basic graphics drivers, very few 3rd party related items running).

The other basic thing to try for comparison is to create a new user for test purposes, and try that in normal mode.

The problem is freezes don't normally leave a log. Nonetheless, please have a look at your Reliability History (just type 'reli' in Cortana's search box) and expand the red x's and see if anything stands out (note the time at which freeze occurs, and see if there's anything reported near that time).

If not, have a look at the event log (Event Viewer). You will probably need to be selective though.

    DiskMark:

CrystalDiskMark - Software - Crystal Dew World

Sorry you couldn't find it. That's how I'd do it..

    System spec:

You can see in addition I have - Home/Pro specified, what sort of RAM, display, screen res. (those two aren't significant here); what sort of drives, browser and AV.

Speccy should give you the info.

Good point- I can't find so much out about McAfee Real Protect (it seems to be a beta and its FAQ page is a 404 (dead) ), but I'm going t guess it's meant to be capable of being run alongside a conventional AV. @Agh55 - can you confirm?

Also please try disabling both Norton and McAfee (you can disconnect the internet meanwhile) and check for any freeze.

Hi thanks for all who responded and helped with my issue, the problem appears to have been a clash between McAfee and Norton. I have totally removed McAfee and the PC appears to be stable. I had downloaded McAfee Stinger and this other file must have come with it. I been using Stinger for a long time with no difficulties.

One final question, I see on Windows 10 you can reset your Windows 10 without loosing your files, what about software that is on your PC, does it remain

    Once again thanks.

  12. 1. Remove malware and viruses

Malware, viruses and trojans are capable to make Windows 10 freeze from time to time. In our days malware and adware is everywhere. That’s why you should check your PC for infection. Use MalwareBytes, AdwCleaner to remove malware from your PC.

    2. Software related issues

Go to Apps & Features, sort all installed software by date. Try uninstalling the lately installed software. The important point is that any program can damage Windows 10 and lead to freezings, spontaneous reboots or BSODs. And it doesn’t mean that the program that caused it is bad or malicious! It can be just an unstable version or an old version not actually compatible with Windows 10 for 100% .

    3. Install the latest drivers

Very often incorrect or non-native drivers can cause Windows freezings and even Bluescreen (BSOD). Thus, please check if you have the native drivers installed but not compatible ones.First try the latest version. If you believe it has problems revert to the previous version. Also try installing another version of driver.

    4. Make sure there is enough diskspace on your system drive

Windows 10 can randomly freeze, glitch or just slow down because of a lack of a free disk space on the system drive. All those new versions of programs, all those Windows updates and browser caches take so much disk space. So you need to have at least 20 GB of free space to be sure your PC will boot successfully the next time.

    5. Check the temperature and clean the dust out of your PC

Use HWMonitor to check current temperature of your system components like CPU, Chipsets, Graphics cards, etc. If you see that the temperature is too high clean your PC and replace the thermal grease! It is also advised to change the thermal grease on CPU, GPU and Chipsets at least once in 5 years.
