  1. Windows 10 PE / RAMOS as a permanent replacement

A RAMOS runs on essentially the same principles as WindowsPE; the operating system gets loaded into RAM. Some users may find this useful depending on their specific situation, but not everyone would understand.

As previously stated, since the OS stores itself on a "partition" created in RAM, everything within that partition Windows resides will be wiped when the computer shuts down or reboot. That may seem like an inconvenience for some, but it is exactly what I need.

"Why would any right-minded person choose to use an OS like this?" With hardware problems, my company needs time to "allocate budget" (or so they say); I need a short-term replacement for a headless media encoding server. Software configurations are done on an external drive (along with media), and all I need is for Windows to be on standby.

Speaking of "standby," it leads me to the next problem... WindowsPE has a built-in 72hour limit. It subsequently reboots. You heard that right; Microsoft deliberately made this change in WindowsPE for such use cases; the solution is either -break the shutdown and reboot function entirely-, or switch to RAMOS.

RAMOS is a niche market, I've seen some solutions online, namely, running a shady script that copies the existing OS on the hard drive into RAM, but there isn't much more information.

Is there a viable solution? Perhaps someone already figured this problem out? Alternatively, is there a Linux replacement?

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

  3. Install Driver on Windows PE Environment

    Hi,

We are trying to install kernel-mode driver to Windows PE, but not able to do so.

We checked using DevManView tool to check driver in windows PE. But we didn't see the Device object created.

We suspect that the Driver Service didn't start.

Given below are the details of the issue:

Driver Details: SCSIAdapter class filter driver. (SdFilter)

    Steps followed:

    • Used DISM to edit the Windows PE image offline. (Inset image below)

    • Manually added the Driver details to the registry. The registry change is visible after reboot

    • Manually added Service (ServicesActive database) to offline image. The registry change is visible after reboot (inset image below)

We suspect that the Driver Service didn't start.

Can someone please guide how can we add the driver to the Windows PE environment.

PS: The given filter driver is test signed. So, we suspect that later we will face test signed issue but that will be our second step to debug. Right now, not able to get through the first step.

    Thanks and Regards,
