Windows 10: Windows 10 Photo App's Save option is grayed out, only Save As is available when cropped

Hi all,I've been looking for a solution to the problem where the Save option in the Windows 10 Photo App is grayed out and only Save As is available when cropped.I couldn't find any solution in the Windows community, but I figured it out.This is a bug in the Windows photo app. No one noticed.The photo app doesn't recognize the vertical cropping as an edit, but if you crop it horizontally, it recognizes the edit.Please check the GIF I attached.

Unable to save an edited (cropped) photo

All of a sudden, when I crop a photo in the windows photo editing app ("edit and crop"), the option to "save" is greyed out and the only option is save a copy - fine, but when I click "save a copy" it saves the original photo without the edits. This never happened in the past, and I am now unable to save any edits to my photo. What's going on?

Hello SandiParker, welcome to the Microsoft community, I'll be happy to help you today;

I understand that the "Save" option in the Photos app is grayed out;

Initially I suggest you try the following;

Update apps from the Microsoft Store;

Open the store and click (...) in the upper right corner to access Downloads and updates;

Click Get Updates and wait until all apps are updated;

Check for new updates on Windows Update:

1: Open the Windows 10 "Start" menu and select the "Settings" item.

2: then select the "Update and Security" option.

3: in the "Windows Update" section, click "Check for updates".

4: If there are no updates, the message "You are up to date" will be displayed.

5: if there is any pending system update, the message "Features update for Windows 10 ..." will be displayed, then click on the "Download and install" item to start the system update.

6: wait for the update download to finish and restart the PC, or schedule a restart to be able to finish the procedure.

Open the Photos app and check if the "Save" option is now displayed;

If it still doesn't appear, try repairing the Photos app;

Press Windows key + I and access Applications;

Select the Photos app and click on advanced options;

Scroll down and click Reset;

Wait until the application is restored;

Now check if the Save option is displayed;

Photos doesn't register/save crop changes, but will save other changes

I have just started having this problem and it's driving me insane - I use images the whole time and when I now crop them they no longer save. The answer below from Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP specializing in installation, performance, troubleshooting and activation is just not helpful. I need a simple and urgent solution to this! I will try Shane's solution to crop to preset sizes and then adjust but it's a workaround not a solution.
