Windows 10: Windows 10 Photos app black screen/file system error. Fixes don't work. Happens on multiple...

Sometimes when opening a photo in the Photos app, the app opens, but just has a black screen. Occasionally, if I wait long enough, it'll say "File System Error" and fail to open the photo. I have tried everything inthis guide to fix it, including reinstalling the windows photo app using powershell, resetting it, repairing it, and running chkdsk. Repairing or reinstalling fixes the issue for the next time I try to open the photo, but the problem comes back immediately.


This happens on my desktop PC, as well as my Surface Laptop 3. It makes me wonder if it's a problem with the app or with my windows account. Does anyone have any ideas on fixing this issue permanently?

We have been seeing black screen issues of several types after upgrading to Windows 10. The main causes observed so far are driver issues, output to unexpected port, and possibly also issues with the Lock Screen app. Please use these steps:

If you see the black screen only after sign-in
and you can see a mouse cursor:

• 
  While at the black screen, try using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to start Task Manager.
  
• 
  If it becomes visible, try finding LockAppHost.exe on the Details tab and ending the task.
  
  • 
    If this resolves the black screen, then perform the following Powershell command-
    
    Re-register all Windows Store Apps by running the following commands in a CMD window started as Administrator:
    
    PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
    
    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register
    
    "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

    Repair damaged Windows files:
